I've noticed that color prints take on different tones under different lighting conditions.
SSSSSOOOOOOOO000000000oooooooo...
What lighting conditions do you print for?
AAAAAANNNNNNNDDDDDDdddddd.....
If you're selling a portrait, do you check the lighting conditions it's going to be displayed in
and print accordingly...(knowing that the customer may change them anyway)...
Thanks for your replies...

The idea is to have the print match the colors that would've been at the point the photo was taken, usually lit by natural light. eg if you took it inside under tungsten lighting you might change the white ballance so it doesn't look so orange, but you might leave a little orange in for warmth. You can't adjust a print for where the customer's going to show it, it's just not practical.

I've been doing a lot of research here and on other boards to learn about my system's characteristics so I can figure out how to use it...I shoot the d30 and print on the Epson 1280 which I think feed each other's love for saturated colors...to get the print to look like it does on my monitors (a sony trinitron and a nokia invermask) I've had to use a 1.5gamma setting on the printer as well as the saturation and yellow output...but I'm finally getting the print to match the screen and an output that holds up to reasonably under different lighting sources...My real problem is that I'm red-green deficient and so matching my 'vision' to a normal eye is nigh on impossible...maybe I should just go back to b/w... naah...

By all means, ask the client what lighting conditions will exist where the print will be displayed. Explain the situation to them and they will probably be very impressed with your knowledge and attention to customer satisfaction.
