hey,
I'm sick of my 14inch old monitor and would love a new 20inch widescreen.
Can anyone let me know what I should be looking for in a LCD monitor?
8ms refresh rate seems to be a standard.
Apart from photography I edit for a magazine and play PC games here and there.
thanks for your input.

This thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=234333) in the general chat has some good info.

Are you seriously saying you have a 14" monitor? As in a CRT for a desktop,.
..or a laptop? (in which case 14" is perfectly nice :) )

I no longer have a 14 ... well not on my Desk
I purchased a LG flatron 19inch on saturday. has 6000:1 contrast ratio and a nice sharp image. The Dell monitor were far too expensive for what they offered.

which model did you get? I bought the Flatron 19" Widescreen L194WT.
Colors aren't 100% accurate, but I don't really need one that is. I just wanted a 19" Widescreen.
this one has a 2000:1 contrast ratio, but it is not really 2000:1. it uses dynamic contrast adjustment to get that high number.

I got the Flatron LG194WT 19".
Must make a correction here: in error I posted 6000:1 contast ratio - this was a typo and should have read 2000:1 : )
The colours are very comparable to the Compaq CRT I had previously however - perhaps not surprisingly - a bit brighter.
I really would like to calbrate the monitor as I think it might be a bit out. Flat white appears a little red to me ... it might be best to check.
I was also fortunate to pick up a second hand 120 gig drive for $AU45 at the swap meet on the weekend - just what I needed!

Being overly bright yet appealing to look at will cause issues with the color space being correct, I found. Calibration is a must if you want to get accurate results in your images.

Am I going to have to purchase one of those expensive spider calibrators or is there are less expensive way to do it?
Perhaps some software.

The Pantone Huey and the Spyder2 Express are the two fairly inexpensive models that seem to work great. IMO this is the way to go over software only calibration like Adobe Gamma.

Wayne the Pantone Huey is what I use that Mike has pointed out. Try inputting PSAUG in the Search box at B&H Photo. Just recently you could find it for $59.95 using that code.
