i shoot with continuous file number, but how do you reset the folder numbering back to 0. i managed to reset the file numbering back by setting the camera on auto reset, but that doesn't reset the folder numbering. also resetting camera settings etc doesn't help either.

Try formatting the CF in the camera. That should take care of it. You might want to set the custom function back to "continous" after you format the CF if you want to keep it from reset to 1 again the next time your reformat the CF card.

When I format my CF card, the file numbering and folder numbering stay continuous and do not reset. Of course, this is formatting done by the camera while the card is inserted. Do you mean a low-level format with a computer?

Sorry, I should have been a little more explicit. This is what you need to do to reset the numbering to start at 1:
1. Set the menu "File Numbering" to "Auto reset".
2. Insert the CF card in the camera if not already there and set menu to "Format" and then press the Set button to format the card.
This should set the numbering back to 1. Now, go back t omenu "File Numbering" and set it back to "Continuous" so that the numbering doesn't get reset to 1 every time you format the CF card in the camera.

Am I correct in interpreting a file 263-6310 as the 16,310th photo taken on a digital Rebel XT body? If the menu has ever been in auto-reset mode, it is not presently, would the number now be lower than the number of photos taken by this body? Is there somewhere else to check the number of photos taken on a digital Rebel XT?

You can not rely on the file sequence numbers to tell you how many pictures have already been taken with the XT because that number can be reset to 1 or to any other number one chooses to set it to. Only the techs at the Canon repair center will know for sure how many shutter actuations the camera has had.
