View Full Version : Problems with digital peanut slave

I have an old Vivitar 283 that I'm trying to fire with a Wein digital peanut slave. This is my 3rd flashgun, intended for use as a background light. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it to fire in sync with my other lights.

I have an ST-E2 triggering two 420ex flashes as my main and fill lights. No problems there. The Vivitar definitely fires, but not in sync. I've tried manual metering, Av, and P, thinking that the metering system is somehow fooling the slave, but all modes seem to end up with the same problem. Besides, the digital peanut is supposed to impose a delay so that the slaved flash is not fired by the metering preflash.

Anyone using a digital peanut experience a similar problem? Is there possibly a trick to coordinating the delay with the lights? Could the ST-E2 be tricking the slave? I'm at a loss...

Shutter speeds have generally been less than 1/60s, and the flash's batteries are fresh.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The Wein Digital Peanut slave is designed to ignore only 1 preflash. With your setup, you're likely getting 3 pre-flashes: one from the ST-E2 and one from each 420EX.

I believe Wein has more sophisticated (and more expensive) digital slaves that can be set up to ignore more than 1 preflash.

Thanks; that was my concern. Think I'll write to Wein and see what the alternatives might be...
