New Rebel XTI - now which lens?

I just got a new XTI w/kit, now I need to decide on a lens. I shoot surfing and landscape mostly.
For surfing I'm going to need atleast 400mm or a 200mm + 2x right?

I'm a bit short on cash after the purchase so what should I be looking at down the road?

* I'm a new member and now that I have a shinny new toy I'll be a frequent poster and lurker here in the forums. I apologive for my newbie qualities in advance. Just looking to have some fun and capture some epic surf here in Maui. Mahalo!

For surfing, yes you will need at least a 400mm lens. Given your budget, I think I'd try either the 50-500mm sigma, or the 200-500- Tamron. Both can be had for under $1000.00. Last year at about this time, Dell had a Sigma sale at 10% off. The Tamron regularly goes on sale for $799 to $850.
