Ok guys I have a question and I really hope you can help me with this.

I have a 300D now and am contemplating getting a 20D.

I am wanting to know, is the 20D that much better to where I should get it or would I be just as well off to get some High Quality lens's for the 300D.

I take some pretty decent shots now with the 300D and am just curious is the 20D worth the money?

I guess I am asking if I use the 20D and 300D on the same shot with the same settings and lens am I going to say wow what a differance or not notice any or not enough to justify the expense?

Here is a phot I took with the 300D.

thanks for all your help in advance.

I've just upgraded from a 300D to a 30D, and the biggest difference is the speed of the camera.

Is the 300D stopping you getting pictures at the moment? If so think about upgrading it, if not save your money and/or buy new lenses.

hey,

i too started with te Digital Kiss when it first came out. I loved it. Took some awesome pics with it. Once i picked up the 20D, i realized that it was an entirely differnt beast on its own. I love my 20D. The 20D is a step up from the 300, and to be honest i never want to go back.

hope this helps.

I am not missing any shots with it, I have used it so much its like my best friend...

The above shot was with the 300D and the Canon 75-300 lens, would I be better off to get a better quality lens and then maybe next year get a 20D or a 30D?

Look at your work - are you bumping at the edges of your equipment anywhere? Focal length mostly at 300, or 18? Aperture wide open and wanting more? Those are symptoms of needing a different lens. Are you missing shots, either because the camera isn't responding fast enough or because you're filling the buffer? A later model camera would help there. From your examples, you're doing fine with what you have. An IS lens may be a "nice-to-have" for panning shots, or something a tad faster for cloudy days. Or a flash to expand your photo environment.

I think you'd benefit from the bettr AF system the 20/30D brings.
Or consider the XTi? It has the same AF system but doesn't have the 5 fps - which would also help you.

Great shots, only thing I'd suggest is try to pan with a slower shutter speed so that the background and wheel spokes blur, enhancing a sense of movement. I'm just being picky tho - I really like what you got there!

It's sooo worth it. I use an XT at work and prefer to use my own 20D instead. I think you'd really like it if you made the switch.

The big thing I am wanting is the servo in manual and shutter priority modes, if I could get that in the shutter priority mode I would be happy...

I have the hack but its not the same, I am just thinking I can take my shooting to a higher level with the 20D.

I love the 300D but I want to be able to have 1 focal point and it maintain focus as I pan and I think I have to have the 20D for that. I really think it would take my shots to a new level.

I started with a 300D shooting mostly minibike racing and later some local big bike meetings. Apart from the shutter failing at 5 months old and it being repaired under warranty I was generally happy with it's performance and features.
I then upgraded to a 20D with BG-E2 grip "which I never remove" and touch wood have had no error 99 issues with. As soon as I started to use the 20D I was impressed by the build quality, much more user friendly controls, the speed the camera woke up from standby and the faster frame rate and larger buffer compared to the 300D. Coupled with my 70-200f2.8L IS it is ideal for the events I usually cover and as someone who shoots mainly for fun it produces great results at an affordable price.
If im honest I upgraded from the 300D after the shutter failed and I just lost confidence in it, at no point before that had I considered upgrading but after doing so the benefits of the 20D over the 300D were very easy to see.You seem able to produce excellent results with your 300 and if you are not experiencing performance issues then as others have suggested it might be better for you to invest in some glass and upgrade at a later point.

Good luck.

i used the 350D for a few months and it felt slow and the AF felt semi unresponsive
so i'm glad that i made the switch to the 20D, it feels very strong and feels good in the hands .. in addition to that it feels much much faster and since I have no flash the higher flash sync speed is really nice

anyway i think it's a good upgrade

How the hack he could get a slower shutter speed with his lens, the sun wasn't shining constantly.

Buy the best you can comfortably afford. The 30D would be sweet with the spot metering, but the 20D is no slouch.

it will, i was using a 300D for racing when I started and it worked but I missed so many shots. The 20D was a big upgarde and I have not looked back. I still use the 300D as back up but man al servo rocks. Now the 5D is a diffrent beast.

I went from the 300D up to the 20D and have never regretted. I contemplated the 30D but the larger LCD just wasn't worth it to me so I saved myself a couple hundred bucks by going to the 20D. Other than that they are pretty close to being the same camera as far as I'm concerned.

Thats my question, is the 30D better than the 20D if the cost is not a problem..

If you've got the money then buy the 30D. It's a simple choice particularly with any cash back deals..

There's little difference between the cameras but buying new makes more sense.

ok.. so 20D or 30D?

I recently went from a 300D (which I've had for years) to the 30D and I would definitely recommend this upgrade. The 30D is much more robust and personally, I feel that the layout of controls is much more intuitive on the 30D. I like the wheel instead of the buttons on the 300D. The large lcd on the 30D is a welcome change also along with the brighter viewfinder.

Will the double rebates currently available you can get the 30D for $939.95 from B&H Photo.

Yes, it has some minor improvements and the cost difference is minimal with the rebates available currently. In fact, the 30D might even be cheaper.

You might want to SERIOUSLY consider picking up some better glass instead... For the cost of the 30D you would be pretty close to the price of a 70-200mm f4 L AND 17-40 f4 L. If you already have the 50mm f1.4, you will be well on your way.

I use the 300D with my 70-200mm f4 L all the time, and I just love it. I have a grip on my camera, and it makes a huge difference when using heavier lenses. I also used to use the 75-300mm f4-5.6 lens, and while I loved it at first, it only took me a couple months to 'out-grow' it and upgrade to the L. It made all the difference in the world.

If you upgrade the body now, you will still want to get the lenses before too long. I'm with the 90% of the people on POTN that will tell you to get the glass first, and the body upgrades later.

Go straight for the 30D.... I upgraded from the 300D to the 30D and it is a huge upgrade.... less noise at high ISO's, faster startup... Spend the extra $$ now and get the 30D.

For the kind of shots you have posted, two ways that you will love the 20D/30D over the Drebel -

- instant startup. 1.odd seconds doesnt seem much till you use the 20D and check out the diff.
- AI servo mode that is clearly better than the drebel.

Apart from that, there are a few bells and whistles and also the build that 'feels' better.

All in all, I am completely happy with my upgrade to the 20D....

ok.. I bought the 20D...

Should have it in a week to 10 days...

I have the 50mm 1.8 lens now, just got it today as well as a speedlite, I still have the 75-300 lens but feel a better 200-300 lens would help, I dont need "IS" so what lens would be a good choice?

Two obvious candidates would be the Canon 70-22/4 or the Sigma 70-200/2.8.

If you need reach, Sigma's 100-300 f/4 is a fair choice in terms of price and quality. As long as you aren't doing night stuff, f/4 will generally be fast enough.

Then there's the brother of the 100-300, Sigma's 120-300 f/2.8(no lens like it). However its a tad more pricey.
