Post your very best Guitarist capture w name & reason...:D
This is Travis Tritt,.. America's best kept secret...Country rock, country, bluegrass, love ballads, guitarist and sensational vocalist...He is a powerhouse of energetic entertainment...
To the rest of the World, FYI: Travis has many Platinum records under his belt...
I chose this picture, because of the colorful background, and Travis Tritt in action (with his studded leather jacket off).

Positive comment's welcome...

I think it is a very good shot...the only thing that would stop me from making it a "great guitarist" shot is you didn't get the entire guitar.

You know taygull,
I, first thought of the guitar neck needing to be clearly visible and in focus...later, all I keep remembering is this "eye candy" colorful background...and his show was so dynamic, I really felt the need to post him in this fashion...
This particular moment's lighting at the venue, just didn't afford me the depth of field required, to present a completely focused "guitar and performer" scenario...But Travis is just so strong a vocalist and superb guitarist, I just had to use this colorful shot for simply, the general eye appeal...

I don't disagree except I think the only thing that NEEDS to be in focus is the face. As a concert shooter I think it is "understood" that due to shooting wide open parts of the performer or his instrument may be out of focus.
One of the things I like about my favorite Vince shot is it is pretty close to be all in focus because he was facing straight on during the shot.
The shot above is a very nice shot...I think you could even bump the saturation a touch and make it look even more vibrant.
I do enjoy Travis and his music.

Yup, I wondered if the face in this photo is in the best focus possible...Maybe it's my eye glasses that I need to have checked...
I found that sharpening this photo brought out more of a grainy finish to the drums...Unless those are glitter flakes in the drum finish, frankly taygul, I can't tell...
Travis Tritt, was just flying by me horizontally across the stage, and much of the time, focusing on him was just a general area type of thing...
In the mean time, I'm wondering if anyone will take the time to retrieve some great, creative images of guitarists in action, for posting...I have a couple of other rock band guitarist's pictures in mind for adding to this thread...

taygul,
There were only two Auto Focus Points on, in this picture. One is on his sideburn/cheekbone and the second was on, in the air above his head...go figure...
When processing this photo, I considered these two Auto Focus Points...and assumed the lens and camera did it's job...and that PP sharpening would adjust the marginal distance from his cheek to the profile of the nose...
It looks pretty close to me...however the distance from the camera, to him was approx. 15 feet...at f1.8, there should be enough depth of field for plenty of room for sharpness...

I didn't say this was OOF, at f1/8 though your DOF is going to be very small.
Do me a favor...if you don't mind...shoot me an email with the large jpeg. I'd like to do my standard post process and see if it looks much different than what you have here.
I'm about to leave for the night but will check it when I get home.

here's a shot i've not posted before, as i shot the event for a mag (ended up not getting on the list and had to pay, but that's another story...), which should be back from the printers very soon. i like this shot because it's ultra-crisp, gets the details of the battered and weathered guitar (this was their 1st US tour ever, 30 years or so after they started, and they pretty much stopped playing in 1978 or so), and shows Deniz' determination to make you rock yr goddamn socks off. he definitely managed that.

Now if I can only remember which one I did what to.
All I really did on this one is just a little Noise Ninja and use the Manyk SRS tool to resize and sharpen.

The other I selected the background added a little noise, blurred and added a little saturation and vignette.

I have done very little concert photography and this is one of the few guitarist shots I have. I like it a lot though, mainly for the expression on her face that indicates she is far off in a world of her own. This is Marliese Botha, bass player of South African band Cutting Jade.

Very good results taygull, thanks...
I checked these out early this morning...I definitely find the last one making a substantial difference...the contrast allows Travis to pop out more from the busy background...the first one of yours, reflects less noice...it's noticeable especially on his right arm...Thanks again for your valuable efforts...
Your own guitar photo from Nashville is very interesting...
You have that, perched on top of the world look... it's really far out...The background looks real inviting, for some real extreme snow skiing...I trust you aren't afraid of heights...

This is one of my favourite shots to date of actor James Marsters taken recently aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
He writes and sings blues and ballads, but is more well known as the bleached blonde vampire from Buffy the Vampire slayer and Angel.
He's just finished filming a psycological thriller with Tony Todd(of The Candyman fame) and is now filming a romantic film with Hilary Swank and Kathy Bates called P.S I love You which will be on our cinema screens in early 2008.

Kenny Neal stands tall among the younger generation of blues players. His individual brand of blues, featuring a combination of Louisiana swamp blues, funky rhythms and soul-deep vocals, powered by his slashing guitar playing and loping harmonica, puts him at the forefront of contemporary blues players. I took these photos at the 19th Annual Bull Durham Blues Festival in Durham.

I don't think it is a paticularly good picture but I love the fact I was able to get it. Here is the story, this girl was nuts on stage. It was all I could do to follow her with the camera. the all of a sudden she jumps off the stage into the crowd and almost lands on top of me with her guitar in hand, poor roady didn't know what to do, jump in after her or plug her cord for the guitar back in that she just ripped out. Any way I had to quickly tune on the on board flash and get the shot so here it is. The rest of the set is here Diamincan (http://www.flyguy.ca/~newtiburon/zeineth/Concert_pictures/Diamincan/)

The guitarist pictured is Mike Gladstone, of the band Uncle Plum (http://www.uncleplum.com), out of Rochester, New York:

I've known Mike since we were 5 years old. He is, I truly believe, the best guitarist I've ever heard.
This is his "Rock God" pose. He didn't see me; he just really gets into his playing. The photo's a bit blown out in the face, and the focus could probably have been a tad sharper, but that don't make no nevermind to me...

Taken yesterday in Birmingham UK at the NEC. Having seen Dwights pictures of Styx at Chumash I knew Tommy Shaw plays PRS. He didnät bring it out until near the end of the show and that's when I got this.
I was lucky to still be in the pit.

Actually, I haven't seen yet that anyone responded with his name yet, but that is Tyler Burkum. They just played their final show last weekend in Hawaii.
He's been doing some touring playing and doing background vocals for Matt Kearny.

Steve Rothery of Marillion, not that you'd know it, I just like the photo, have had it black and whited, blown up to about 4 foot wide, signed by the man himself and it's going on the living room wall :-)

Guitarist for Mark Schultz. I like the color, clarity and expression:

Guitarist for Shiny Toy Guns - I just like the stance and the photo overall:

This is Dr. Mark Lee of Third Day. I really think this is my favorite because of the color, the lighting behind him and the way he's looking up. I do wish I had a bit more guitar in the pic without losing any of Mark. LOL

Hi John! You have great shots too!
I use the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS for most of my concerty photography images..and ANY image since it was the only lens I've had for a year. I recenty just bought a nifty fifty. woo.
I tour and work for an artist named Ben Kweller (http://www.myspace.com/benkweller). It is one guy but he has a band. I'm originally from Belgium. I was raised in Beaumont, TX. I go to college in Boston but I spend most of my free time in NYC. I took a semester off to tour so I was everywhere for a while. haha sleeping in a bed that moved 60mph.

I also have the 28-135 IS... It's a very versatile lens... With high ISO, you can manage a lot of different venue captures.
Texas, I lived in... but that was back in the 80's (Montgomery County, also Houston and Dallas)... I see you really are experiencing the road life... With the cost of gas these days, it's not just anyone who can get to travel. Make the best of it.

Your boss certainly looks like a class act... Great opportune capture... I'm certain he's proud to have you on his staff, especially when you can occasionally deliver these great photos...
It's a tough and very demanding business you're in... roll with the punches... You're experiencing a rare opportunity, most wouldn't understand...
Documenting your travels in pictures is the thing books are made of. I think some autographs of performers, would also compliment your experience...;)

Couple of my favourites, but I havent really taken that many
These were all taken with a Canon D30, yes thats right a D30 with a cheap Sigma 28-135mm lens, no PP just cropped
Second is very nice

Second here as well. Normally not my type of thing (overly saturated), but I like this one.

Nice. Particular like the first, but second is nice as well.
@dwight: I think I'd crop a bit bottom and right. Very nice B&W though.

I considered that but I didn't want to drop that little puddle of light ... but now that I've lived with for a while maybe I'll back and make a virtual copy and recrop to see how I feel. Thanks.

Funny, that's the one thing I'd crop off ;)
Then again, looking at it again, it might be well to have it in.
Choices, choices ;)

Scrolling the page up and down looking at it with and without the puddle my choice is that the puddle stays.

just move the damn puddle to the left a bit and crop ... there ... now everbody is happy except the pure-ist, photojournalist types ... in which case you'd be fired and blackballed for the rest of your life (and rightfully so as moving that puddle will significantly alter the meaning and representation of that image) ...
