Does anyone know if the D60 was used at the Salt Lake olympic games? I would like to see some of the shots made with a d60 and a d30 of the games. I am considering purchasing the d60. My camera retailer is trying to talk me into getting the d60 instead of the d30 because he said they would retail for approximately the same price and it was a better camera. I would like to make up my own mind

Gee Russ,

The D 30 is 2 year old technology. suffers from noticable shutter lag, and slow (when it works) sluggish autofocus, just to name a few problems. The D 60 has addressed these shortcomings and it has a much improved image resolution for the same purchase price.
Why would you consider buying a D 30 even when your Canon Pro dealer is advising you to get a D 60? It's not to his/her advantage to sell you a D 30, in fact if I happened to have a D 30 in stock I would be inclined to unload it ASAP before the D 60's arrive.

Take your Camera Shop's advise and get the D 60, I have shot both cameras and the D 60 is leaps and bounds ahead of the 30.

Just my 2 cents.............Cal

ps. I doubt that the D 60 was used at the Olympics but it looked as if there were a few 1D's there.

I agree, I work at Ritz Camera, not some knock-off chain, we have 1300 stores and we get a lot of cool stuff in stock. Since there are only 4 full-timers one of which is me, we really get a chance to test them more than people at K-mart, or target, because we can trust eachother to bring the back in perfect shape.

When people come in and tell me what they are looking for I KNOW WHAT IS GOOD, AND WHAT IS BAD. They tell me they want to ask their brother-in-law about his. Well hello, do you think is brother-in-law is going to admit to having a bad digital camera? And do you think the brother-in-law is going to be out-done by a newer camera??

The point is if you go to a good camera store, you get professional advice, whereas you prob don't know much at all. You might own a digital camera, but we get to play with 80 differant models for 40hrs a week.

As far as the D30 or D60, IF the D30 was $1000 and that's all you had, buy it, I had one for about a year, I just got the money from selling it on Ebay. It was a REALLY good digital camera, and still is!!

Canon is one of the top (and on this site THE VERY TOP) camera maker, they wouldn't go down in quality. I can't see why anyone willing to pay the same amount would even consider the D30. When you have film cameras quality doesn't advance nearly as fast as digital. The next EOS-1 WILL NOT BE twice as good as the 1v. BUT THE D60 for the most part is more than twice as good. I've heard the noise isn't a problem with double the pixels, but why can't we go to ISO 1600 anymore? Because 1600 was grainy with the D30, and stuffing 100% more pixels in the same space will only allow 50% as much light for each sensor. Most of the time, that causes noise. I'll have to wait 'til my D60 comes in to make my own mind up. But I was willing to pay half the price up front w/o seeing the camera.

If you buy the D30 you're going to keep coming on here, and looking at D60 shots, and wonder if yours is as good. Then you'll have to sell your D30 on ebay for no more than $1200, and be out $800.

BUY THE D60 SILLY!!

Dave :)
