First and most important question you need to ask yourself is what's my price range. Everything will depend on that.

What does she do with the pictures (ie. Email them, print 16x20s, print 4x6s, desktop editing)? What pruce range (300-400, 400-500, 600-1000)? Are you going to use it too? Do you want manual options or just point and shoot?

Get her a S400. Elegant and easy to use.

the s400 is nice, i have one i carry everywhere.
if she is not too worried about using full manual controls then i would go for that one...

Better yet, give her your S400, and buy yourself a 300D or 10D. :D

do you post on a lot of other forums?
I think this is the 3rd forum where I've seen that pic posted. I wonder if someone is stealing your work.

I am the same boat for my wife. Bought her a Canon A80. Has all the features she needs plus plenty of room to grow. Small package, regular batteries, swivel LCD, good lens, and good macro performance. About $400 for the whole thing with a 512 MB Compact Flash Card.

Might be considered heresy here ... but I just bought a Kodak DX6440 for my wife.
Has a lot of the features of my G2, a 4x Schneider-Kreuznach 2.2-2.5 zoom lens and is available for as low as EUR 200 in special promotions.
Best regards,
Andy

If it was my girlfriend I'd buy her a CHEAP digicam. If it was my wife I'd buy her an EXPENSIVE digicam.

No such thing as a cheap digicam... Even at rock bottom, you're talking close to a pair of C notes. You could always buy one of the $10 disposables and tell her it's digital.
If she's blonde, she'll swallow it hook line and sinker.

No such thing as a cheap digicam...
Here in California at Longs Drugs they have two cheap digicams this week:
#1 Fuji FinePix A205, 2MP, 3x zoom, w/16MB XD card, batteries, and software for $99.99.
#2 Vivitar Vivicam 3330 1.3MP, 2x zoom, 8MB internal memory, batteries, case, cable for $79.00.
How's that for cheap!

I stand corrected... But, I wouldn't give either to a GF, especially if I had any hopes of our relationship escalating beyond BF/GF status. Women have a way of remembering who's generous and who's cheap...

If you want your girlfriend to become a wife, then consider buying her a good digicam as a girlfriend and an excellent one when she is your wife. Then again, I know goofballs who will buy their wife the cheap one and their girlfriend an expensive one.
It all depends on how much of an interest they actually have in photography. As AndyThaler suggest, you can probably get away with a decent Kodak and both of you will be happy.
