I asked a pro about this format back late last year and he said the format has been out for awhile but not many uses it. From my understanding It's supposed have better compression than regular Jpegs and not lose any of its data when opened multiple times. But I have not yet seen anyone use it.

I may be a bit out of date, but jpeg 2000 is supposed to allow for a loss less compression mode (meaning no loss of quality) as well as it was supposed to allow for layered download (meaning you could download only to the quality you needed for you application. There were supposed to be some other capabilities (such as region of interest quality setting), but am under the impression that these may have not been implemented in the final version.

From a practical standpoint. It is my understanding that not everyone can view a jpeg2000 file as it is not standard enough, but that was the intention.

The main advantage of jpeg2000 is it provides the non-propritary ability (meaning anyone can use it) of jpeg with some advanced download features.

This is as I understand it from a few years back. I have not kept up with the standard and don't use it yet as I pretty sure most of my customers can't view jpeg2000 images on their home systems yet. Give it a couple more years though.
