Just looked up the 1D on

http://www.warehouseexpress.com

and read this:-

Product update 20th Jan: According to Canon UK this product has now been discontinued and no further stock will be available. We anticipate its replacement will be announced very soon.

So what is to follow

Read the forums on dpr - lots of info/wish lists and just plain misinformaton there.
Now I know what the replacement is - but cannot tell (not sure if I should tell you that much!).

B&H is telling customers that the 1D is discontinued as well.

Common knowledge, even though not officially announced by Canon. They stay pretty tight lipped and rarely does anything get leaked, but this has been known for some time now.

The key is what will replace it? :) There has been acres of speculation...

That's no joke - the speculation is all over the net. I enjoyed participating in it myself, but now that the 10D is actually in town (UPS has it set to deliver tomorrow), I'm not as anxious to speculate any more.

Now the 1D - Now that Nikon has caught up, Canon is about to make another quantum leap forward. Now I don't hate Nikon, but I'm really enjoying this competition. Especially when my brand is winning. :D

It's interesting to read about N***n's new D2H. I'm not sure if there's anything to be learned from it, but they chose to stay with relatively low resolution---4.1mp, but an insane burst mode of up to 40 images @ 8fps. With a $3200 street price (US), it's pretty clear where it's intended to compete. I would say Canon will definitely one-up the competition if history is any predictor. Just what they’ll do is going to be fun to watch.

I just hope the price ain't too whacked so I can buy one. I really want to move up a step for my sports photography. I make due with the 10D, but I'd love to have the speed of the 1Dn(x) or whever the heck they're going to call it. I think Nikon will hold the frame burst record, but Canon will come close and then blow them off the map with pixels and other features such as less noise, faster AF, etc.

In my opinion (which means very little in the grand scheme of things), Nikon aimed this camera at one specific group - newspaper sports photographers. Who else could use the low pixel/fast burst function to its best advantage? Realistically, they finally matched, and maybe surpassed the 1D with that huge burst mode, but that slight advantage is probably going to be short-lived. They barely topped Canon's oldest digital SLR.

I'm wondering if that camera was announced as an interim - I can't believe that they are that far behind. Does Nikon have something up their sleeve next month at the big show?

Ah, but.
If you can afford to wait and get maximum exposure (sic) at a major show - then you do - Canon?
If you need to show that you are still in the game - even for a short period - then you announce as soon as you can and get short-term benefits - Nikon?
Believe me if Nikon had something else up their sleeve then I don't think that they would have released the D2H when they did. If Nikon are going to announce anything at PMA2004 then it will not be anything to worry the 1D update - which will make the D2H look two years out of date.
Sorry to say this to all the Nikon fans out there (I wavered about going Nikon at one time - there now I feel better having confessed THAT - as I really liked the F4 body, but Canon lenses swung the balance) but they are really playing catch-up at the moment; Canon are making the running and setting the benchmarks in both Digital sensors (CMOS/FF etc) and in lens design (DO/IS etc.).

Nikon always seems to be a step off for some reason. These shows come up and they just show what they have. The announce their stuff at odd times. But then again, I don't care. I don't do Nikon.

As a shooter of a D-1 series camera for sports, news and feature photos, as well as Canon gear, the fast fps & frames in memory before writing to card are both important. It's really aggravating to have something going on that you want to capture and not be able to because the camera is still writing to the card. The small megapixel count is not a problem since most journalists' don't need huge files for print. The D-1, D-1H & D-2H are marketed primarily to journalists. It will be interesting to see what Canon comes up with though. Whatever it is, I hope they will make it as rugged as the Nikons. IMHO Canon has it all over the competition for image quality, but based on my experiences, for ruggedness & dependability, Nikon has the edge.

If Nikon have something up their sleeve, it may be the D70.

If the info here is accurate: http://www.bythom.com/d70.htm

That camera would provide some serious competition for the D-Rebel, beating it in a few key areas areas:
- Flash exposure compensation
- 25 Custom functions
- Flash synch to 1/500 (although FP mode with an external flash gets around this)
- 20 Frame buffer

All for D-Rebel pricing. This is a market that I would be going after if I was Mr Nikon.
