Hello sir. I have the 400 F/5.6L and 2x. I would not recommend it, too much loss of IQ and 800 F/11 will not autofocus. What are you planning to photograph with this.
As for the 400 F/5.6L, its a superb lens, super sharp wide open. If you want to put a TC on, go with the 1.4x. The 2x is mostly designed and useful on the super-teles. The 300 f/2.8L thru 600 F/4L

I have found that the 2x takes away too much quality

The only reason i got one is for the 300 F/2.8L IS. I have not been happy with it on other lenses. Not terrible, but not great. On the 300 it is really good actually.

i cant speak for the 400mm but i can for the 70-200 2.8, i noticed absolutely no IQ loss with my 2xTC, just my brain taking a few minutes to realise i lose a few f/stops and thinking my damn lens and camera are borked because i couldnt get it down to 2.8 :) then i realised :P

I have the 400mm f5.6 and both converters - if I were you I would stick to the 1.4, the 2x losses to much IQ.

Here is a shot with that wonderful piece of glass and both the extenders stacked...

In good light it can be done... I also switched to the 300 2.8 for better use of my extenders... I am looking forward to my trip to FL next year....
