edit, copied fom the other thread

I have a 400d, and several times i have noticed that the last few photos are jpeg only, which i assumed meant i had run out of enought memory on my card for a raw file. I have just downloaded my last lot of piccies. scenario... off to a park to photo flowers, change lens half way through, but not turning off the camera. Later, after had been turned off, i photo some bees at a friends house. so now i download, and i get to the end of the bees, and suddenly there are jpeg files from the end of my download of flowers. My cr file numbers start at img 2305 (flower), last one is img 2535 (bee). There is a break in the middle, where i jump from img 2418 to 2425 (middle of slower shoot), and then continues again 2426 etc. At the bottom of my downloaded images, are then the jpeg files 2419 to 2424 (flowers) then 2478 to 2487 (all flowers).. again a gap in the img numbered files. Now the only think i can think of, is i set my camera to macro mode at some stage, would this for some reason change the camera setting out of shooting raw? I have raw and jpeg together setting. have i confused you??

In a nutshell, why is my camera suddely shooting jpeg only, and then switching back to raw plus jpeg?

If you're using any of the Basic Zone settings you cannot capture in RAW, only JPEG.

Yes.. :D

Format your CF card in computer frist, than again in camera.
Try couple of shots and see what’s gonna happen.

Jon's nailed this one. The camera will only shoot jpeg if it is switched to a basic zone setting.

Nah, not really. If you are going to use a basic setting, why not use a basic compressed image file? I guess Canon figures you don't really need RAW unless you are a control freak like me and take all of your shots to shoot in manual..... and I tend to agree ;)

Think of it this way, if you cant take the time to change a few extra things ON the camera, what happens when you get that RAW file on your computer and it needs PP? Will you take the time then?

in my case, yes. I wanted to see what the camera would come up with if i used an auto mode, but i also used the macro mode, so........
