Well I would, but that would of course require "good light" to, you know, exist. Nothing but clouds lately! Here's a test shot that accurately sums up the last few days:

Anyone know how the drainpipe compares with the 70-200 f/4 L in terms of size and weight?

it's a good bit heavier... as far as size, I'm sure the drainpipe is larger, but it's not going to make much difference when shooting.
The weight could be a concern, but these are gems!

Indeed they are! I've basically had NO time to shoot with mine yet, as it's been nothing but rainy up here for weeks (especially on my days off), but in my limited use I've found that under the right conditions this is one of those "too sharp for the camera's sensor" lenses. Here's a 100% crop that's unfortunately been diminished a bit quality-wise because of POTN' size requirements:
80mm, 1/100, f/3.5, ISO 100, no PP, playing with my new flash trigger:). I also forgot the color profile so it's way washed out.

I finally found the stats, where else but wikipedia and damn! - the drainpipe is almost twice the weight of the 70-200 f/4!!
1130 gm (about 2.5lbs) vs 705 gm for the 70-200f/4!!

This is, of course, true...but wouldn't a more fair comparison be with the 70-200 2.8? Plus, I honestly think that the Drainpipe is better at 2.8 than the 70-200 4 is at 4. If it's the f4 IS, that may be a different story...

Man do I freaking love this lens. I'm starting to think that I may, in fact, love it too much to NOT lug it to France with me. Even though it's still pretty impractical, I just can't imagine selling it. I really can't.
Obviously nothing special, I just kind of like this shot:

EDIT: sorry, had to repost...forgot the color profile and the ©'s!
OK, I finally got to do something mildly interesting with this lens! Went to the zoo today with my girlfriend...kind of bad light most of the time, and too much shooting-through-fences, but got a few decent ones anyway. I shot 275 pictures, and 110 of them were 100% usable...a pretty good result, for me at least! Things I learned today:
• 1/400 is just about my lower limit at 200mm
• The AF on this baby is no slouch. I had a 75% keeper rate following these three African dogs in AI servo mode.
• Don't accidentally freaking leave the AF switch on 3.5m-Infinity!
• The 40D's ISO 1600 is more than usable if you expose correctly
Without further ado, here you go:

I'll put up 100% crops of any of them if you like. Man do I love this lens!

darosk
11th of August 2009 (Tue), 10:58
I've handled both side by side (Drainpipe and 2.8L non-is). You'd be hard-pressed to find a difference in image quality - both are stellar. The images straight out of camera seem to be slightly warmer on the drainpipe - at least to my eyes.
If you can find a good deal on a good condition drainpipe, I'd get it, if only for the $ savings and the black paintjob.
Something to consider is that Canon no longer services these lenses (discontinued production some 14 or so years ago), so if it conks out or something it might be hard to get it fixed.
Scour eBay, CL, fredmiranda and other photography buy&sell forums. I've seen some pop up from time to time on POTN. Finding one shouldn't be too hard. Finding one in ex+ condition might be tough.

How hard is it to find one of these bad boys?
It took me a few months (of admittedly unintensive searching) to find mine...I was tempted by a couple of expensive ones and one or two beaters that went fairly cheap. The one I finally found has a slightly snaggy zoom ring , loose rubber around said zoom ring, and a nearly undetectable hairline scratch (looks like it came from a cleaning) on the front element. I was kind of worried until it got here, but I've since fallen in love.
If you're really into pristine-looking equipment, it'll probably be a bit of a search!

Hi, I bought a drainpipe the other week for a sum in Swedish crowns equal to about 650 US dollars. It is in very good condition cosmetically and came with a tripod collar, but no lens hood (I have since bought a third party hood more effective than the original). So far I´m loving it, although it´s a bit heavy to walk around with. Here are som pics: Sibbarp (http://albertsprosaiskablogg.blogspot.com/2010/03/sibbarp.html) and here Folk (http://albertsprosaiskablogg.blogspot.com/2010/03/folk.html)

Drainpipe is one of my most favourite lenses, period. I have two copies (one good copy and one beated) and both have equal image quality on my 1Ds. I can also say wide open performance is excellent.
Below is comparison of the same scene at F2.8 and F8. Not so much improvement at all IMO.

You have to find the sweet spot f-wise. Although this lens is pretty sharp at f2.8 it will be sharper when you up the f. Mine is best at around f4.5 - f5
Do not turn the focus ring in AF mode. :) Not good since it doesn't have FTMF
Be careful with it since canon won't fix it for you anymore ;)

I like my drainpipe, but if I had to pay 700 or better I probably would look at a newer version 70-200 L just because they still are serviced by Canon unless the one you are looking at is like brand new and works like brand new in every detail. IMHO

And there are a good number of those around. I've seen several on the FM boards that were in absolute mint condition, as if they were bought 20 years ago, put in a closet, and forgotten about. Those are definitely worth the money, in my opinion. The part of this lens that's shown to be fragile is the AF switch. The rest of it has a good track record for reliability from what I can tell reading around the web.

Hello, I'm going to buy mine next week. I already know, that the AF switch is broken and stuck on 1,8m - infinity. Is it worthy to repair it? Is there a noticeable difference between focusing in mode 1,8m - infinity and 3,5m - infinity? thanks

Hello, I'm going to buy mine next week. I already know, that the AF switch is broken and stuck on 1,8m - infinity. Is it worthy to repair it? Is there a noticeable difference between focusing in mode 1,8m - infinity and 3,5m - infinity? thanks
Apparently the AF/MF switch is the most common thing that breaks on these lenses. In my opinion it's totally worth it (depending on how much you're going to spend...this is an actual functional issue and should detract from the price). The purpose of the two AF settings is to minimize the time the lens needs to change focus. So that second (apparently broken) setting is useful mostly for shooting action that's reasonably far away from you. It'd make it so the lens never has to go all the way from MFD to infinity focus. I think this is valuable in certain situations, but I personally always leave it on the 1.8m setting.
I know a guy who goes on photo trips to Alaska quite often. A few years ago he got to visit a polar bear reserve (or some such), and was actually charged by one. He had accidentally set his 300 2.8 IS to the second focus setting, so what should have been the shot of a lifetime - the polar bear maybe 10 feet away from him, looking angrily directly at the camera - was ruined because the lens wouldn't focus closely enough.
So no, it's not a huge problem, but you may want to fix it some day, if only to get MF capability.

Great new posts and shots!
I use the MF on my lens once in a while with my tube set so the switch is important to me. I would MAKE SURE if it is going to be important to you to find out if parts can be purchased to fix it. Just a phone quote wouldnt be enough. You would not like making the purchase and then finding out they cant fix it after all.
There are a lot of these out there so if you are paying large, get as close to perfect as you can. Mine has a very slight wiggle to the nose end, probably a loose screw in there but it is very slight and doesnt affect operation and it has some cleaning scratches on the front lens that has never affected the quality, but that was worth a discount to 450.00 shipped and it still takes wonderful photos. I am strictly hobbiest photographer, rookie all the way and Im not picky at all.

So, I did some testing after being disappointed with images done at 200mm. Looks like my copy is off at 200mm (-20-15 in MA on 7D) although it's more or less spot on at 80mm. Anything I can do about it without having to sell? What do you think?

Are you disappointed with long end image quality or because of backfocusing?
I have had very similar problem with my specimen. It was sharp and spot on on 200mm but the smaller focal lenght the higher backfocus. It did on 1Ds, 1Ds II, 1D, 20D bodies i tried it with. As excellent lens i was using it but focused it manually. Now i changed my 1Ds for 1D III and problem is gone!
I still do not know what is the cause of this focusing issues but what might help you i partially disassembled lens and put it back together because barrel was wobbling very slightly. After that it still backfocused on 1Ds though..

Yeah, focusing issues. I have to adjust the micro adjustment to -17 or so at the long end, but then short end goes out of focus

I still love this lens so much. Sometimes i think i want to sell it for a white one, but then i look at the pictures and wonder why.

How ironic is that, he shot it with my lens and I claim it to be off on focus :)

Thank you for the loaner, I would have got nothing that day without it. :)
After using it that day I couldn't really find any issue with it. That said, I have not spent the same amount of time with it or peeped the pixels as rigorously as you do. But, it was much better than my Sigma 70-200 (non DG), which is kinda dying in some way though so that may not be a fair comparison, and it wasn't as good as the 70-200 Mk II I had just rented. A bit of a Captain Obvious no poop statement there.

Tell me more about this...my MDP has a slight wobble to it as well. I don't intend to take it apart, but might pay someone else to do so if it is a fixable issue.

I have 2 in for repair at the moment, have ordered the repair manual from USA, waiting on it, I'l pm you in a week and let you know how I get on
I've just owned one for a very low price (75€) but it has an issue with the AF switch that is not working. I will try to dissasemble the lens but don't know where to start. I think the first step is to remove the ring beside the red circle at the front (there are hidden screws under). The problem is that this ring seems to be glued so I don't want to make mistates. Any advices ?
I have a document with drawings that details all the parts and references.I can share it for those are interested (this is not a repair manual)

I was told the AF switch is the first thing that breaks on those. You are sure brave to be attempting to repair it yourself!
