I think the image has three competing elements, the tree on the left, the tracks, and the clouds (partially hidden...)

When you took this picture, you likely were taken by the clouds and the lighting...

Try raising the contrast of the image (curves tool so you can retain detail in highlights and shadows.)

Converting to black and white may help (or going the other way and saturating the colours...)

I like the layout of the second picture better (seems more natural?), but it seems a tad weak in the shadows. (No real blacks on the monitor here.)
