View Full Version : Compact Flash card Problems?

Hi Folks,
I'm having some problems and I'm suspecting that it might the compact flash cards I'm using.

I got a 300D about 3 weeks ago, with the kit lens, and was using a danelec 256 MB card quite happily (probably took a couple of hundred shots - no problems).

Yesterday I got a 2nd lens, a canon 75-300. What I'm finding is that every time I change the lens (after switching the canera off), I have problems, either
- it claims the memory card is full
- images are corrupted
- or the camera hangs
same thing happens if i simply remove and re-fit the kit lens.

If I remove and replace the battery, then reformat the card it works fine until I change the lens again.

I've tried a twinmos 128 MB card it's quite a bit better, but I have problems maybe 1 time in 5 when I change the lens.

I've also tried a canon card (only 32 MB :( ) which seems to work fine - no problems.

So..... Anybody else having similar problems? Have I just been buying poor quality memory cards (they work ok in my ipaq)? Anybody think there might be a problem with my camera?

What would be a good brand of compact flash card to buy?

Thanks
Hugh.

I have several brands of older CF cards that I don't use anymore but I did try what you are doing with my 10d with no problems.

I hada Dane electric card and I think the best thing to do with that card is to flush it down the toilet. Mine lost images for me and I had no confidence with the card. I have had my best luck with Kingston cards. I've never had a bad brand other than the Dane Electric. On second thought, don't flush it down the toilet...it may corrupt your toilet too!!!!

Hugh, are you sure that the camera is done writing to the CF card before you start tearing things apart (lens and power)?

If it were me, I would co a full re-format in the computer on the CF card, then format it in the camera and start all over. It can't hurt.

Thanks all - I'm now using a PQI 512 MB card - no problems yet. I guess I've been guilty of buying the cheapest compact flash cards I could find on ebay and am now paying the price.

I still find it a bit odd that I only get the problems when changing lenses. It makes me think those wee contacts on the lens and body aren't quite as well isolated as they might be.

Thanks again.

Yeah hhyndman, watch those super cheap CFs. They'll bite you, as you have learned. Bob had a good suggestion though. Format it on your PC and then format it in the camera.

I do have to say that I have never heard of the names of the CF cards you're using.

If you have problems after changing lenses it could be the lense connection..Error 01. I sometimes have this on the 1Ds and have to clean the lense contacts more often than on the 1D or D30.
