So I've been deciding on a digital camera because I want to get into photography. I'm probably going for a canon. I've read a bunch of reviews on both the S2 and S3; but I can't decide between the two. It is for the most part the lower price of an S2 vs. the improved features of the S3. I'm not sure where I want to buy it, hopefully at a retail place so I can be clear on insurance/warranty. I know that the S3 has a higher megapixel sensor and new ISO range. Did anyone upgrade from the S2 to the S3? Is it worth the extra cost?

There was a recent thread about this and if I remember correctly the general consensus was it is really not worth the cost jump up to the S3....unless of course the changes from S2 to S3 are personally something you are really into. ie, if price is an issue...the S2 is really not that far off the S3 at all. S3 is pretty much a minor upgrade from the S2 with a nice paint job.

new ISO range = very good likelyhood of extra 'noise',
5 to 6 MP = not a big deal
2" LCD is definitely nicer than 1.8"....but 2 is still borderline "small" these days
new color = much better than S2 IMHO

basically I would suggest if price is an issue go for the S2...pretty much the same camera and not worth the price jump IMO

here's some more threads on the topic...

the S3 also has a live histogram if that's important to you
