After weeks of comparing and reading reviews especially this one I finally decided on the 10D with a Canon 24-85 ultra lens and a 512 high speed memory card. I tested the CF to its capacity (178 pic's on jpeg - fine) and reformated. 1st pic blew my older Nikon 885 out of the water... Wow. I thought it would and it did. Now don't get me wrong the 885 was a 3.2 mp and it did take great pic's on hi res but it was so slow! Now I need a flash. I know before I ask that the 550 is the best. ha But really how well do less costly flashes work? Are there other choices. That was the only one listed on the Canon accessory list that come with the camera. After blowing over $2K my pocket book needs a rest! Just a note on CF cards. I took test pictures, did the above capacity test, reviewed pic's with the camera but the card would not upload to my PC with my Sandisk reader. I took it to the camera shop and they couldn't read it eigther. It was replaced and the newer one worked fine. I will surely fully test future cards before I take out for real!!! :D

Thanks again for all the comments

If you're looking for a respectable but less expensive alternative to the 550EX, try the 420EX. It's just a little over half the cost of the 550EX.

You stated that you can fit only 178 on Jpeg-Fine on your 512 compactflash, not sure if different brands operate differently or not, but on my Sandisk 512 extreme I can fit 203, on the 1g Ultra II I can fit 407 on the same settings.(highest Jpeg settings) Does everyone else get different shot amounts with other brands?

Indications are that I'm getting roughly 100 on my 256. The 512's will be delivered tomorrow. :)

I just re checked my 512 mem. I formated it and the 10D shows the following pic's avail at jpeg large fine setting and iso of 100 =203, iso 200 = 192, iso 400=179, iso 800=152, iso 1600 = 138. I think I said 178 but I did have one pic on the card at that time.

I am selling the last of my still cameras to buy sound equipment. This camera is fairly new (low miles) with a Zoom lens EF 28-70mm -two batteries and 1GB card (also the bottom grip base) Priced to sell. This is a great Still camera. Please feel free to page me if you're interested.
Thanks,

hi there,
can anyone explain to me please what the memory card speed affects?!!
is it only a matter of transferring the pics afferwords (to computer ....) or does it affect the "taking" of the picture by the camera as well ...
thanks in advance
