i have a G3, and of course my mind is going to the rebel.
for speed focus all seems ok, but i have two question :
1) what about the grain ?
could somebody could post a picture of a same place ( inside house or museum, with different sensitivity ( 50->1600), to compare.
2) what about focus in the corners: i use flexizone on G3 and like it . is the 7 points autofocus enougth ?

i had a G3, and just got my rebel.
There is no comparison between the two when it comes to ISO noise.
The Rebel blows the G3 out of the water!
I find the noise at ISO400 on the rebel to be lower than ISO noise on the G3 at ISO100.
This is a full size ISO400 shot with the rebel at 1/60 seconds.

(since tripod doesnt allow hotlinking, just copy and paste the link in your browser)
For long exposures, the rebel excels too. I have shot 30 second exposures that are as silky smooth as 1/60 second exposures.
Here is a full sized, 30 second exposure I took with the rebel.

The 7 point autofocus has been fine for me. The only thing I miss from the G3 is Flash Exposure Compensation.

thank you : really impressive
have you other example at 800 and 1600 ? ( i ask that becasue i would really plan to take shot in museum or inside monuments (mainly people and paintings) and 400 is good but not enougth. and it is a point where i do not want to made a mistake.
thank you another time :)

Hey no problem.
Here are a couple shots at those ISO's. Both were taken at 1/60sec which is the slowest handheld shot you can get (more or less). They were shot in Raw, and converted with C1 Pro.
Once again, cut and paste the link since Tripod wont allow linking.
ISO800

ISO1600

As you can see, ISO800 is still fantastic. Probably better than ISO200 on the G3. ISO1600 is also totally usable. Also keep in mind that the rebel gives you 50% more resolution, so noise becomes even less noticable when printed.
I dont think there is a digicam out there that offers lower noise than these Canon Dslr's.
Ps. I apologize for the boring photos, but it's -40C outside with 4 ft of snow!

Note that the DRebel does not have an ISO 50 setting (for some reason).
Hey Drisley, where are you that it's -40C? That's cold.

If the G3 is anything like my G1, ISO 50 is really closer to ISO 80.

Umm, 7 AF points are enough => just as long as you don't plan to use Auto Focus Point Select.
dSLR's will have a shallow depth of field wide open compared to a "G" camera. Focus is therefore more critical. A number of 10D owners I know use preselected AF points to ensure the camera picks the right place to focus on.

As far as a direct comparison, check this link:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/page14.asp
It compares noise levels of the Rebel and G5.
It notes that the ISO50 on the G5 is closer to ISO80, but for some reason, the G5 is stll less sensitive than the Rebel at equivalent ISOs.
So, comparing ISO100 to ISO100 may be about right.
When I look at it, ISO800 on the Rebel is about the same for noise as ISO100 on the G5.
ISO1600 is about the same as ISO200 on the G5.
BTW, I'm in Canada where it is currently a balmy -28C.

Here in NYC, it's -9C, but with windchill, it feels like -18C.
Damn, Canada is cold.

Basically that is because it doesn't need. it. The sensor is very good and I doubt they could reduce the noise any more to justify a drop to ISO50
