Hi folks!
I was the lucky G2 owner and have taken a lot of macro-photo with it. Now I`ve got the 300D with the Kit lens, Canon 50 mm 1.8 and a Sigma 28-200.

But I don`t have any lens for macroshot - what should I buy?

Best regards Bo

Well if you do not want to spend a lot of money ona true macro lens I would stick with the kit lens and pick up some cheap diopters. Here are some of my results using the kit lens with/without diopters:

Sherman,

I got some info about the Canon 500D close-up filter here (http://www.rogercavanagh.com/helpinfo/18_500D.htm).

For the simple shots like the inside of a flower (one inch across), I use an extension tube on an ordinary lens. Simple, but effective.

These won't win any contests, but they will illustrate what an extension tube can do for you. The first picture was with my 28-105 as close to filling the viewfinder as I could get. On the second image, I used my new 12 mm extension tube with the same lens. I could have gotten a little closer yet. I only have the 12 mm, but there are different length tubes that will get you in even closer.

Sherman,

Can I use 500D with the Canon 50mm 1.8? or only Kit lens (18-50mmm)
What about Tiffen and Hoya - my old closeup (G2) lens was from Tiffen?

Regards Bo

Bo,

There two close-up filters: the 250D and the 500D. They come in different sizes, but my advice is get the largest size and use step-up rings for lenses with a smaller diameter.

Note the two filters are designed for different ranges of focal lengths. On short FL, the 250 gives more magnfication. It will fit Canon lenses with 52 or 58 mm diameters. If you check my article, you'll see a table showing some examples of the magnification at different focal lengths.

I am using a set of Royal 52mm diopters (+1, +2 and +3 that can be stacked and attached to the kit lens via a step-down ring) to help with close-ups. I was unable to find a link for these particular brand on the internet. Here is a link to diopters in general that can be helpful...

I hope this helps.

Here are a couple more shots with the kit lens and my diopters:

Depending on the magnification attached to the lens you can get closer to the subject.
