Am about to purchase but..........

I am about to make the leap from an Olympus 20/20 to the Canon D30. Am excited I will be able to use the lenses and flash from my EOS Rebel.
One lingering question remains. Canon tells me the lag time between pressing the shutter and taking the picture is about 1.5 seconds. I miss many pictures with the Olympus and its lag is only 1 second. I thought this was going to be better with a camera that was built to be digital? With the existing camera, I have many pictures of the back of my grandchildrens heads because by the time the picture was actually taken, they have moved on to something else.
If anyone can square me away on this issue, I would really appreciate it.

1.5 seconds? You're kidding, right?

Maybe, if the light is on the low side and/or the lens happens to be at the wrong end of the focus scale for the subject. Otherwise, no way.

If the light is enough for the AF to get a lock, I haven't found my D30 lag to be noticably longer than my EOS300 (Rebel 2000). I don't shoot fast action sports, but I can say that I am confident that any other shots I have missed have been down to me and not the camera.

That said, if you rattle off several shots in rapid succession, you do have to wait whilst the buffer is flushed to the memory card - that can be frustrating, but it will apply to any digital camera!

I think that 1.5s lag is only for long exposure shots (gives you time to remove your finger from the shutter button, so camera doesn't shake). Otherwise, lag is, I believe, about 100ms.

Just a thought, Matthew... why not wait on the D60 if you havent bought the D30 yet? I have the D30 and I love it, but am going to get the D60 for sure too. The autofocus is supposed to be imroved over low light focusing for the D30. The price is going to be comparable.

As far as "buffering", you will be greatly impressed over the E20. I had a buddy bring his E20 over and we tested them both for capture-to-write time and the E20 acts like an old woman.... no offense to the elderly.

i agree with everyone else...

i owned an E-10...and once i first used the D-30 it felt like a machinegun...that fluff about the shutter lag is for the whiners who are trying to shoot in available light and wondering why the D-30 can't focus when they can't even see the scene through the viewfinder :eyes

don't flame me...i'm joking :)

anyhow...

i'd wait the extra 4 or 5 weeks and see what prices the D-60 ends up going for...as well as availability...either that or get on a pre order list...i think canoga is going to be the most reputable in that department...although i haven't a clue what the "real" price is going to end up being...

i'm know i'm going to "trade up" i.e. sell my D-30 kit for whatever i can get :)

I suspect you're thinking of the delay when using mirror lock-up with the self-timer. That is 2 seconds IIRC.
