Super low price in buy.com. Somone has tried to dig out the Hitachi 4GB MD for digital camera use:

I just wanted to throw this out into the mix

http://www.apple.com/ipodmini/

I know there are other companies out there that are producing similer products but the ease of use and fantastic interface of the IPOD is simply awsome.

And based on the picture (purely based on the picture) of the one you posted the ipod mini is smaller.

You can get a flash card reader, they cost $100 and i dont know how well they work, but for MP3's i wouldnt spend money on anything but an ipod (as of right now...the Dell player and creatives "zen" are very nice too)

I think the reason he posted this is because apparently you can open it up and use the 4GB microdrive in your digicam...and it's about half the price of just buying the same 4GB microdrive (odd isn't it).

A few people have paid $300.00 for this item,. just for the card,.

I like the price! :) And I ordered one. Doesn't look like I'll get it for a few weeks though.. I'll keep everyone updated on how the surgery goes when I get it. (almost got two! but then I decided maybe I'd best try it out first :) )

I dont see the purpose....unless you were going to be putting it into an xdrive i guess.

Also $199.00 at Amazon shipped;

The purpose???

You get a 4 gigabyte CF card in your 10D or Digital Rebel!!!!

FOUR GIGABYTES OF STORAGE IN YOUR CAMERA!

http://www.andymack.com/mylog/pivot/entry.php?uid=standard-868#comm

What's not to like? For only $200.00

It would cost $800.00 or more if you used CF cards,. even the drive itself (the 4 gig MD) sells for about $600.00 at B&H

Does anyone know if the actual release versions have an un-soldered CF in them? WOrd is that the one that was hacked was a pre-release and that's why it wasn't soldered. There's a huge thread on this over at Fred Miranda's.

I'll let you know as soon as I get it! :)

Frankly,. no one has offered up an image of a "soldered" Muvo.

It all seemed to have stemmed from one post on Dpreveiw where somone likely just decided to rain on everyones parade,. there was no proof to back up this statement a week ago,. and there is none now.

On the other hand,. a few have purchased the Muvo and so far all of the ones opened have a removable drive.

I am trying to see the logic in the manufacturering process to add the extra step of soldering in the drive? How would such a step be an advantage to anyone? Won't it make repair,. warranty service more costly?

If Hitachi were only going to sell drives to Creative sans standard CF plug interface to keep costs down,. ,. then why wouldn't that decision have been made pre-production? Why would there be any of them out there with removable drives?

Anyway,. as I said,. well soon see.. :D

I'll keep you all posted.

Ignore that b*llocks; I very recently purchased a RETAIL MuVo2 4GB from a large, reputable outlet here in the UK (Dabs) for £240, then swapped the 4 GB Microdrive for one of my two 1 GB drives.

My MuVo now functions perfectly with 1 GB of storage (still 20 or more albums) and my 10D has a 4GB (well, 3.8 GB really) CF card in it most of the time.

I thought that the cameras couldnt address more then 2 gigs, thats all...maybe i'm wrong

Yep,. the 10D has "FAT32" support,. so it can address more than 2 gigs.. :)

The 1D which is much older is limited to 2 gigs,. (as are the D30 and D60...)

I did some more digging on this 4gb card because i've always been under the impression that microdrives are much slower than flash memory based cards.

Check out this page:

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-6395-6476-6481

then checkout the specific performance tests: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007

The Drebel is by far the slowest camera around with a max xfer rate of 1324kb/s(Sandisk Extreme 1GB). The Kingston card that I use transfers at 922kb/s The 4gb Hitachi Microdrive transfers at 719kb/s.

Most people who are into speed shooting obviouslly woulnd't by the Drebel since it's relatively slow and has a small buffer... but there is still a noticeable difference in transfer rates between the 4gb Hitachi drive and the average flash memory based CF card.

Just my .02 cents.

It's true the 10D is also pathetic with this MD (oddly it is much slower than the 1gig MD??? which goes against physics for gods sake!)

..but I am willing to sacrifice speed in the case of 4 times the storage for the same price! :)

Nor do I have any of "the fastest cards" :(

So I will be going from about 1,000K to 750.. about a 24% decrease.. not good,.. but not as bad as nearly half speed.
