Hi everybody
is there any difference between exposure compensation of the 550EX and the camera's (10D) when using a 420EX? if this is the main isssue to upgrade to a 550EX, is it woth it to get it over the 420X?

Since the 10D already gives you FEC, if that's your only reason for going with the 550EX, then save the money and get the 420EX instead.

The 550EX is: 1.) A much more powerful flash with a Guide Number of 55 Meters vs 42 Meters fot the 420EX 2.) Able to function as Master for a wirelsss flash set up that allows you to set flash ratios. 3.) Able to go Manual flash and 4.) able to do stroboscopic flash. FEC is clearly not the main reason to buy this flash. It has become one work around for the lack of FEC on the Digital Rebel, not the 10D.

- The 550 is a more powerful flash.

- The 550 has manual power settings, which can be adjusted from full power down to 1:128.

- These manual settings can be used to trigger conventional light slaves.
The "E-TTL only" of the 420EX will trigger the slaved flash duirng the first test pop of light resulting in failure.

- It is needed as a MASTER if you want to use the Canon wireless TTL system with other 550's or 420's. You could choose to use the ST-E2 transmitter but it is less powerful than the 550 and of course it's not a flash.
