is there a way of controlling the flash

by this i mean so that it doesnt white out your shot

is there a way of it flashing in a controlled way by the user set in a similar way to the shutter speed?

most interior shooting im doing are a little underexposed and the flash in normal mode comes out

is there a way i can control the flash output or is it not controllable

cheers

Yes, adjust the FEC (flash exposure compensation). The instruction manual describes how.

I think you need to use one of the creative modes to do this (P, Tv, Av or M).

I've also found that setting the "Set" button to bring up the FEC screen is very helpful.
