Hi,

I'm currently exploring the possibilities of the exhibit engine for use in a new homepage. I was trying to import some photos with exif information and noticed that not all data was imported. At first, the camera and lens were always the D30 and 70-200...I soon found out these could be deactivated as defaults. I'm uploading pictures using the 'UPLOAD TO DATABASE' in the menu (using step 2,3,4,5,6). At step '5' I have 'guess camera' and 'guess lens' checked.

Guess lens shows the following ftp information:

msg 5746 | ftp
GUESS LENS:
Searching maker: Canon
Searching aperture: 2.8
Searching focal: 5
Searching focal range: 5.40625-16.1875
highest ranking lens id found is: 16

Guess camera shows the following ftp information:

msg 5745 | ftp
GUESS CAMERA:
Searching maker: Canon
Searching keywords
Canon
PowerShot
A40
highest ranking camera id found is: 2

So basically, it knows the camera was a Canon Powershow A40 with some lens information. However, for some reason unknown to me, not all of this information is shown in the exhibition. The camera make/model is not shown at all. My current homepage is based on a different application but also shows exif information. The following is used:

File size: 70710 bytes
File date: 2003:12:13 01:33:32
Camera make: Canon
Camera model: Canon PowerShot A40
Date/Time: 2003:12:04 11:20:36
Resolution: 800 x 600
Flash used: Yes
Focal length: 5.4mm (35mm equivalent: 46mm)
CCD Width: 4.09mm
Exposure time: 0.013 s (1/80)
Aperture: f/2.8
Metering Mode: matrix
Jpeg process: Baseline

Information like the Focal length with it's 35mm equivalent and camera make/model are useful for me. Is there a reason why this information is not transfered into the database? Is there a setting I'm overlooking, or is it still under development?

For additional info, you could check this screengrab:

Thanks for any information.

Dennis

I did not have A40 photo to test, but I got one A20 photo for which EE seems to get all the data ok (including focal lenght).

The problem in camera guessing can be solved by setting you A40 camera name in camera editor "Canon PowerShot A40". This will give you exact match every time.

The problem with focal lenght not displaying is there because the lens EE finds (or rather can't find and picks the last in the list) is "inbuilt" which turns off lens display in detail list, and the focal lenght in included in that lens display text

LENS: A40 inbuilt lens @ 6mm (29mm in 35mm film SLR)

If lens is "inbuilt" nothing is shown there.

The remedy to that, until I separate the focal lenght display from lens in photo page, is to make a new lens e.g. "A40 inbuilt lens" and assing that to the photos. Lens guessing is not accurate at all if focal lenght range and aperture does not match inside lens data (and I've made this even stricter in next version) so if you have mainly A40 photos it is much better to tick off lens guessing and set correct lens in photodata defaults.

35mm data is calculated using camera editor field "Focal multiplier", which should for A40 be 7. EE stores original mm value and converts it on the fly.

Note that ISO value in Canon A-series is always stored in exif as AUTO. Set photodata default ISO 0 and EE will display "auto" in photo data if numeric data is not found in EXIF.

Thanks for the information, I partially solved the problem already, but with the extra information you gave me it's solved now. The only thing I didn't do was change the ISO value in photodefaults. The ISO value in photodefaults for that exhibition is '800', however most of the photos have a value of '50' and one photo has 'auto'. So I guess that information was read from the photo correctly as well. I don't know if those values are actually the values from the camera since it's not my camera :) A friend of mine was kind enough to give me some photos with exif information. I'm still saving up for a Canon 300d :)
