Hi,
I'm about to buy a 70-200mm f/4L USM at BH and I had a few questions.
Does the lens hood come in the package or do I buy that seperate?
And, would the Hoya "Introductory" filter kit (here (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart_accessories&A=details&Q=&sku=408017&is=REG&addedTroughValue=183198_USA&addedTroughType=accessory_cart_detail)) be any good or should I go for a better one? I'm mainly looking for a polarizer for around $100 or so I think.

Thanks!

Lens hood comes with it.

For a polarizer I would get this one:

Skip the kit, and find a single CP for the same price. That of course IF you really want/need one. The only filters I ever use on my 70-200mm f4 L are my ND filters I picked up for waterfall shots.

Really think so? I would get a normal one... One you can use a lens cap with.

If I am not mistaken, L lenses come with a hood. To make sure, click the tabs on the product description for what is included.

After spending $$$ on a very good lens I don't think putting on a cheap filter is the way to go. Either you go without a filter or use a super multi-coated filter like a Heliopan or Hoya Pro SMC.

yeah, no need for a thin one at this focal length I don't think.

Alright, well just placed an order for a 70-200mm F/4L. :D I chose next-day UPS air, so will I get it tomorrow or Monday?
And I should have a good $200 to spend on other stuff.. I think I'll go without a filter for now, get a memory card and case instead. Unless I could get both which may be possible.

Congragulation on the purchase of your new lens. For the price I don't know of any other lens that has the IQ of this one. It is great for outdoor sports as you can see below.http://static.flickr.com/121/293422062_27f787fd8d.jpg

A couple months ago I got this CF card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820183153
and it has performed flawlessly. For the price I couldn't pass up at least trying it. I've also got some sandisk cards but the ridata might be an option for you to look at.

Well I already have a SanDisk of about the same specs, so I imagine that'd be do-able which is nice.

The lens is on its way but it looks like I'll have to wait until Monday. :(

ah, no. you don't want the thin version for a tele lens - there are no front threads for a lens cap.

Get a multicoated, regular CP. Get top of the line for in front of your L glass

Good catch! That is the one I meant to recommend. Non multicoated is a bad deal. Thanks

Congrats _ you got one of the finest zooms ever manufactured.

No f/4 softness in the quality of this glass.

Way to go!!!! I just got one this past weekend, it is a good lens. Lets see some pic's

Well I don't have any good ones yet, only been able to use it at night. :P
I'll be shutter happy tomorrow, though. :D (and tonight, they just won't be as good - unsteady hands at this point!)

I'm just amazed at the build quality so far. It's a million times better than the kit lens obviously, but it's a ton lighter than my FD 70-210 f/4. It's "space-age".

Woo so happy.

It's awesome... Now you can start looking at 100% crops! You will be amazed. At f4, they will be awesome... At f8 they will be spectacular!

Wow, so I have $225 more to spend for my birthday. What do I get?
This is what I have right now, and I mean everything.

Canon 20D, body cap, & strap
Canon EF-S 18-55mm with caps
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L with caps & bag, box, manual
1 Sandisk 1GB Card
2 Batteries
Battery charger

That is IT. Nothing else, no manuals, box, etc.
So I imagine I want some filters, more memory, and a case, correct?

ChrisBlaze

how about a grip?

Tsmith
13th of November 2006 (Mon), 20:23
For sure a good camera bag. I like the Lowepro brand in the shoulder type. Memory is cheap if you need more and indeed get at least the Ultra II.

braduardo

Get a grip, a 2GB card, and at least one extra battery if you can swing it... I don't know the prices on the stuff off the top of my head, but those would be a good start.

Or you can look at a 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 lens. I don't know how much these go for right now (I got mine used, and a killer deal) but it might be a good replacement for the kit lens. After you get used to the weight of the L, you will find that you want something more solid than the kit lens.

Ves

I don't need a grip, but I'll get a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB and an extra battery probably. Can someone help me out with a good bag for all of this stuff?

Tsmith

Although the XT is shown the Canon 30D fills the space quite nicely.

I'd go with this filter:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=391167&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

and this polarizer:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=391183&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

these are not quite as nice as B+W filters, but they work well for me. I have not tested the Hoya filters that you are looking at, but the lens is good enough that it makes sense to spend a bit extra on good filters.

It's unfortunate that Canon does not have more lenses that use 67mm filters (just the two 70-200 f/4's, the 24-85, and the 17-85). When I travel, I cary the EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM. They are a good pair that share the 67mm filter size and cover an 8x range at a max aperture of roughly f/4.

So here's what I'm going for right now:
Lowepro Nova 4AW - 54.95
Sandisk Ultra II 2GB - 79.95
So that leaves me with about $100 for a filter. I'm still not 100% sure what each filter does and if I'd need it. I live in Arizona, so the sun will be out more often then not, but I don't think to the extent where I'd need an ND filter. I want a polarizer but not sure if I need it, how would it affect motorsport (karting) images? And I imagine a UV filter is mainly for protection. And I won't get a clear filter, that just seems kind of pointless in my opinion.

I'm not really a fan of filters. Figure that a CP filter will probably slow you down about 1 stop. Why don't you try using it for a bit, then if you find it lacking anywhere, or if you notice a lot of dust getting on the front element, look into filters. Just be sure to use the hood. That will probably be just as protective in most cases.

Sounds good, thanks.
Maybe buy myself a nifty instead.

With normally clear skies, the polarizer will really give you good saturated colours. It's not an "always on" type of filter, but when it'll work, you'll be glad you used it.

Don't worry about the filter unless you want deep blue skys or shoot a lot of automobile pics to get rid of reflections, but if you do the B7W is the way to go. As far as results,,,,
