I’m planning to buy the 5D for coming 6 month period and I wondering should I buy also the 50/1.4 for a the low light usage.
I would like to hear the comments for those photographers who have all these three lenses that how often you really using the 50mm prime?
Yeah it's not so expensive but if it's just stay in the camera bag it's wasting of money.

well from the looks of sig you have a nice setup already. The 50mm would only complement your bag. I am really looking at getting one for the sole reason that 50mm is the classic portiat lens and is pretty sharp. Also it boils down to what you shoot. Primes are gonna be faster...

yes! but for a different reason, the rebate. the 50mm would be great, and is one of the lowst price items available to DOUBLE the rebate on the camera.

to get the 5d from B&H for 2719, -300 rebate, -another 300 for purchasing the 50mm and you get a discount on the 50mm. 2119 + shipping for the 5d and you get the 50mm for under 300. Can't complain at that.

Good point.
I personally WOULD get it, because I'm a fan of primes and sometimes you want something faster then 2.8 for a more narrow depth of field or to make up for crappy lighting. If your doing portraits this is probably one of the primes to get.

Right, but I'm not living in the USA so B&H it's not fit for me. I need to pay huge custom fee (Finland) so the benefit of the rebate will shrink off. In the other hand it's maybe good to have it for the special situations.

I have them all, and I find myself using my primes more than the zooms. Better IQ, less weight, more DOF control, low light...
It just depends on the type of photography you do, but I see that you do not have fast primes in your gear, so a 50 f1.4 may help you to experiment with their possibilities in an inexpensive way. You may be pleased with the discovery.

I'm not sure where you live, but I would check fredmiranda, I'm sure you'll find one for sale in your country at a fair price whether your in Australia the UK, Canada or even Finland (just post an ad, there are definitley finnish photographers because I met one the other day who was on vacation in Toronto at the cntower, perhaps it was you? :D.)
I'm with amarasme, although I only have the 85 1.8 at this point, I see myself using primes quite a bit more then zooms. I still plan to get the Sigma 24-70 2.8 to cover 24-200 (I have the 70-200 F4), but otherwise the only other zoom I will have is an UWA one.

I have the 50 1.4 and it's an excellent lens to use in low light ...
you gain 2 stops compared to a 2.8 lens, so it means you can use
faster shutter times (e.g. 1/15s with a 2.8 becames 1/60s with a 1.4).
I found myself using it a lot indoor.
It's also good for portraits on a crop body because it becames an 80mm,
but if you plan to buy the 5D it's better the 85mm 1.8 for this purpose.

50 1.4 is a great lens. It's so sharp and fast. I can't say enough about my primes. They have their place and I don't think you will regret it. But plan to use it when you get it. It's so small and solid. The only thing nicer is the 50 1.2. OOOOO. No, don't even think it, Suz. :(

Thank’s, your comments confirm my thoughts of the prime usage in the low light situation.
Now I need to make up my mind between the 50/1.4 and the 85/1.8 prime.
But I think I will have both of the lenses in the long run. However my dream is the get the 35L but that need to wait for much longer.
Yes I have a lens fever but I think the same diseases will bother almost all the photographers.
ps. I haven't be in Toronto but maybe one day I have a change to visit there.:D

You still need a 50mm. Just to have it in the bag.
Every photographer needs to have a 50mm in his bag. :)
If you're not sure, then get the 1.8 for cheap and if you don't like it, sell it back.
I'm sure that you'll find the prime comes very handy in many many conditions.

in your case I would say yes! You need a fast prime so I would definately get the 50 1.2

Funny coming from a guy with three lenses, three of Canons finest L. You know you only need one more L to complete the holy trinity, right?

Are you sure you need a 50 mm lens on a full frame camera? I find that I either want more telephoto or wider angle most of the time. For example an 85 or 100 is more useful for portraits and a 24 or 28 more useful for landscapes.
When I started in photography I only used prime lenses on a full frame 35 mm body. At first I always carried the 50 mm on the body, because it was supposed to be the standard lens, but found that most of the time when I wanted to take a picture I was changing to a shorter or longer lens.
Everybody has different composition needs, but I would take a look at the pictures I have taken with my existing zooms and find out how often I used the equivalent to a 50 mm focal lenght before deciding to get that lens. If you take most of your shots at another focal length, that is the fast prime you should look at.

I dunno, I always liked carrying around my 50mm on a film body. Depends on your shooting style. A 5D + 50mm 1.4 would be a great, very capable, light and non-flashy setup that could easily pack away in a small travel bag for vacation.

50 1.4 on a cropped body(1.6 crop-10D) makes a good focal length for portraits.
It also gives you a lens that you can shoot with bigger apertures.
But that of course all depends on what you like to shoot.

I use mine every week for low light work. The Bokeh at 1.4 is out of this world and the depth of field close up is millimetres.
With a zoom you stand in the same place and zoom in / out. With the prime your feet become the zoom and you think more about composition.
If you buy it and don't like it you can sell it on and not lose a great deal.
