Some of you may have seen my photographs on the Motorsport forum of the Scottish supermoto championships on 05/11/06.

The guy with the #99 bike has asked me for a high res of this pic and asked about the cost. I think he wants it for his own use & not commercial purposes.

I'm purely a beginner/hobby photographer and have never taken money for a photo.

How much would you guys charge?

Here's the pic.

DONT SELL THE HIGH RES.

Find out specifically what he wants it for. If he wants to make a print, make it for him and have him pay for the print. Here is my print pricing...http://www.motorsportsimaging.com/prints.html you can adjust accordingly to what you think, but I wouldnt go below about $30 usd for an 8x10 size.

If he wants the file for a screen saver or something like that, then you can include it free if he buys a print and size it to his screen size and save it at about a 5 jpeg. That will keep him from making lots of extra prints.

If he doesnt want a print at all, find out what size he wants, size it and save it as a 5, put your name on it and charge him like $10 or something and maybe he'll come back to you next time when he wants prints or other work.

But just dont sell or give away the original because you will lose all control over the image and they can do whatever they want with it including making unlimited prints or whatever. You need to keep control, you wouldnt have just sold the negative in film days right?

Keep control, figure out what they want and price accordingly.

Thanks Jim.

He's already got a low res from photobucket that he uses for a screensaver.

He now wants hi rez so he can get a decent size print.

I don't have a very good printer so I would have to get it done commercially.

I'll email him and find out exactly what he wants.

If he wants a print, fine, sell it to him. Tell him that you need to be able to control all the color and post processing in order to make sure he gets the best quality print out there.

Then use a real lab that you trust. I always use a real lab for print sales, it makes a better imression when the customer gets a photo on Fuji or Kodak photographic paper as opposed to Canon or Epson inkjet paper, even if you can do it just as well at home.

If someone is entirely insistent on wanting the actual file, I usually quote them a price about 5 times the largest print I offer telling them I accounting for if they were to print those on their own and the money I would lose. They usually decline and just allow me to make the print for them.

if he is putting it up in a shop ask him if you can put your name and email address on it and give him the print but no other rights for free if you want to pick up more business like that,,,,
Then have it printed... $3.00-$5.00 is dirt cheap advertising.
