I shot this yesterday morning with my 17-40L. Against all rules, the lens was pointed into the sun. Manual exposure using "sunny 16" and ISO100.
I only noticed the two dots when I was converting in PS. I had 4 images with the same dots in them, the only difference was in the F stop and speed.
I went out and took several other shots right away keeping the lens pointed away from direct sun light and nothing appeared. When printed, the dots are very apparent.
Since they do not appear under normal lighting, could this be a "flair" or a reflection of something within the camera body? (10D) The sensor is spotlessly clean. Any ideas?

A) UFOs
B) Sensor dust.
How do you know the sensor is spotless. Gitzo told you? :P
Try shooting the blue sky at F22 and then Auto-levels.

Ilya,
Gitzo ain't that smart :D
I cleaned the sensor before heading out yeaterday morning. The dots don't show up in any other white or blue background shot. However I never thought of UFO's. Might be on to something here......

Some (dust) bunnies are more stubborn then others. Try the sky trick, see what that does.

Ilya,
Tried the sky trick and the spots are there. I thought the sensor filter was clean but I guess not. Shooting a blue sky at anything below f11 shows nothing. Above shows spots. Guess I'm going out to buy some Eclipse and some swabs.

I've seen too much of it...DUST!!!
Had to take the camera to Canon who managed to get a few stubborn particles off with swabbing while I waited.
If you like taking f/22 macro or sky shots you'll notice it a lot quicker.

It's donkey dander.
I'm surprised you had to ask.

Tried cleaning the filter with Eclipse and it is better, but there are still a couple of "dots" visable shooting at f11 or smaller. Since the Canon service centre is about 10 minutes from me I'm going to run over there Monday morning and have them take a stab at getting the last ones off.
Will post the results.

It might not be donkey dander. It could be burro bits or mule mulch. Just pray it isn't a** aberrations. They can lead to all kinds of problems.

What ever it is is is really getting to me
It seems a lot better now after I cleaned the sensor with Eclipse but there are still a couple of dots visable using the blue sky/f22 routine.
I guess I'm too chicken to try cleaning again but pressing harder as I have no idea how much pressure is too much pressure. Gonig to let Canon play with it.
