I see where Best Buy (of all places) has the Western Digital My Book 160GB HD (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7643053&type=product&cmp=++&id=1134698030419) for $89.95 (thru tomorrow) _ that seems a decent price.
Not having any other back up on stuff other than transferring to Disk would this external USB drive be of a wise investment.
Thanks for any input.

slightly higher $/GB (bargains can be found < $0.40/GB), 8MB cache is sufficient but slower than 16MB (not too big of an issue for backup use).
buy.com has the 320GB version for $130: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=202367540&adid=17662 (pay tax only if shipped to California).
i usually check bensbargains.net for this kind of stuff, it lists good deals almost daily.

Very useful ... everyone should have an external hard drive.

Hey, Bluedog...you won't be disapointed. I have the 250gb version (Premium Edition) and I really really like it. It's fast, quiet and looks good. Best Buy always has good deals on their drives.

It's an endless spiral though. I've got 4 of them and 2 of them are full. :D

I have a 200GB Basic for backup, the USB is a little slow but otherwise great drive.
Soon I'll get a 500GB Premmium with Firewire, that should be a GREAT drive.

I have been using a 500Gb one as my second external backup drive for a while, seems to work OK. I am using mine via firewire rather than USB though.
