I have seen where you can buy just the box with the CF card reader and then you just put in your own hard drive. Any idea which is the best one to get?

I know that Pekka is a fan of the Nexto CF (http://www.nextodi.com/english/index.asp), but I don't know about North American availability. If I was buying today, that's what I'd buy - fortunately it's readily available in the UK.

Yes, that is it. I know I had seen them on here, but could not for the life of me remember what they were called.

I have the HD-80 and love it. Just be careful inserting the cf card in it, as you may bend the pins inside the portable.

Also, worth noting, if you have an outside flash, the portable doubles as a AA battery charger.

I love my nexto. It's light, fast and works perfectly for me. And yes, you can get them in the US. I found two places that sell them. One was in NY, I think. The other one was in Texas. That's who I dealt with. Excellent service, gave me lots of information to help me decide on which one and it was shipped fast.

I would definitely recommend the Nexto to anyone who wants a backup device for the longterm and doesn't need to see the photos using it.

i have had great luck with my Hyperdrive. it will backup 1gb is around 1 minute or so, has enough battery life for a long night of shooting, and is small enough to slip into a pocket while shooting. i agree that you have to be a bit careful with inserting the CF card, but otherwise it is a great product. You can get it w/o a HD and install your own for cheaper (i used a 60gb Seagate drive)
