Hi guys,
For some reason I just put my 430ex onto my Rebel XT with my Sigma 24-70 2.8 on, and on the flash it isn't showing up (in the top right corner) the zoom I am at. It used to, but isn't now. Any reason why?
I am in ETTL mode, High Speed Sync mode with Zoom on and it says --mm.
Thanks,
Bryan

Is the flash in the bounce position, or anything BUT at a 90 degree angle? This can cause the flash to default to its widest setting and will ignore the lens focal length setting. Since that's what you are using for reference - the selected lens focal length - then this could be the problem.
I have 420's so this next point might not be an issue: In any case can you select a Manual Zoom setting on your 430? I can on my 550 but can't on my 420's. If you do have the manual setting selected the flash would appear to ignore the focal length as you zoom, and once again you'd think that the flash is ignoring the lens new focal length as you zoom it.

I do not know if it works for non Canon lens...

I do not know if it works for non Canon lens...Yes, the camera will recognize the focal length of any EOS compatible lens, and the flash should zoom automatically when in the straight forward position if it's set to autozoom.

does the 430ex have a pull out and flop down diffuser? If it does like the 580ex, and that is out, it sets it to a fixed zoom position

If none of the previous suggestions help, make sure that your flash head is not in manual zoom mode.

Hey guys,
I figured out it was because I wasn't shooting straight on, I had the flash head angled up, bouncing off the roof.
Thanks so much for all the help!
