My editor forced me to go photograph this swim meet today, and I wasn't too happy about it because the lighting in our rec center is horrible. I think I managed some prett decent shots for a first time though.

A couple of pics of the venue.

I somehow got access to the underwater window.

Sorry, but I've seen much worse lighting conditions than that.
If you can get shots that crisp through an underwater viewing window, you've got more to work with than a lot of the volleyball shooters I've seen above water. Great shots, although some seem to be a little on the close-cropped side...

What setup did you use for the shots of the venue? Seems really wide for a 28mm on a 300D.

Nice shots overall, though. I'm impressed.

I havent updated my sig in awhile. I've recently acquired a tokina 12-24 and canon 1.4 teleconverter. The shots you are probably surmising about were taken with the tokina.
Sadly, right before the first quarter of our basketball game the next night, my camera died on me. Mirror is locking up and autofocus is shot. Guess its time to buy another camera.

I like these as they are different than what I'm used to seeing. I think you used some interesting perspectives with these shots.

Spiffy series. I haven't done swimimng much and don't feel super comfortable with it. I am going to try some more this year. This is a good variety of shot there... nicely done. Keep at it.... looks good.

These are my first efforts at swimming photography taken at a local club championships. Light was awful so had to shoot at iso 1600. steve

Nice stuff....as a swim dad I appreciate how hard it is to shoot this stuff...now imagine doing it in small town local venues...where lighting is truely bad....!

1600 iso, really? Those look great! What are you shooting with? Did you clean up the noise at all?

images have been adjusted slightly to remove colour cast from tungsten lighting, otherwise images are straight out of my 1d mk2.

I have tried to avoid high iso's at all cost. Now I think I'll start experimenting to see what my 30D can do. Maybe I'm missing some really good shots. Thanks.

great shots. i don't know if you are doing this, but my only recommendation is that you avoid overusing a noise reduction program. these are great shots and the noise won't detract from that in my opinion.

I havent used any noise reduction software, the images have had a colour cast removed and thats it. Steve

I was speaking about Jeff's photos - I didn't realize this thread had turned into a critique thread for your photos, Steve.

Sorry didnt realise as you didnt specify in your previous post re noise reduction any photos in particular and simply responded accordingly. I'd best leave you to be critical of the origional images. Steve

Dude: your lighting at this gym is quite good. I shot swimming two weeks ago for the first time and it was absolutely dark. the best shots only came in the pool due to the underwater lights. These are some very well captured shots. the graininess may be able to be cleared with Noise Ninja
