that has a hole in the side of the block the size of your fist?

As fast as you can!! Dan Martin, the owner of a very fast Mustang, Ridge Runner, (450mph+), decided to really go for the Unlimited Gold crown this year. He worked out a deal with Terry Bland to lease his racer for the week. What plane does Terry Bland own?
Dago Red, one of the most successful air racers in the history of the sport. All was going as planned on the qualifying lap when Dan called a mayday. Part of the ADI system had hung open, causing the plane to use all of it's ADI fluid. Once the ADI was gone, the motor got real hot, and real fast.
In the first couple of shots you can see Dan coming in hot, and sideways to scrub as much speed as possible, and oil just pouring out of the stacks. The next three shots show the extent of the oil on the plane. It is hard enough seeing out of that little race canopy, let alone with oil all over it.

It may seem funny, but everybody holds their breath until the pilot gets down. This is by far the most dangerous motorsport in the world. You can't just pull off the track when your motor blows. Landing an airplane with oil pouring out of it, is not to be taken lightly.

of course... I'm glad he didn't get hurt or hurt the 'stang more than it had to be!

I see race cars blow engines on a regular basis bur I never thought of an airplane racer....that's more NUTS! than those boat racers

It may seem funny, but everybody holds their breath until the pilot gets down. And a few minutes/hours later, they're laughing about it. Either that, or they quit whatever it was forever, no? ;)

And a few minutes/hours later, they're laughing about it. Either that, or they quit whatever it was forever, no? ;) I couldn't agree more. Racing is racing that means taking big risks to win. It also means to build an engine to perform at it's absolute maximum. Just think the average lifespan of a top fuil dragster engine is 1/4 mile! those guys escape death on a regular basis also and most live to laugh about it...this helps to take the edge off and reduce the aftershock. those are some awesome shots by the way
