I have read the post that you can get CS if you give them your PE2 serial, is this the full version or an 'upgrade', also, as a student, at my bookstore (CSULB) they sell an academic version of CS for 299, is the academic verson any different or whats going on? thanks, Ian.

From my understanding CS is CS whether it is an upgrade, student version (just a discount), or new in a box.
You'll love it either way.

Ian,
Academic version is the same as the full version. Some software companies feel that students should not have to pay full price for their products until they leave the confines of higher learning.
What you will see on the start up screen is "Academic Version".
Same software, at a student discount.

The Photoshop CS version that I got using the Photoshop Elements serial number is the full Photoshop CS, with a box and a manual.
From all accounts the Academic Version is the same full program too. What I was concerned about was getting the Academic Version and - 18 months from now - NOT being able to upgrade. All Adobe would have to do is to have it's upgrade look at the running Photoshop and if it sees the Academic Version code, just not function.
There's no point in suggesting that this will or will not work as it is a decision that Adobe can make in the future. Hey if Photoshop can sense that it's a $5 bill you are trying to scan, then it can "see" that "Academic Version" header.
In any case I decided that it was time to get a real copy of Photoshop and took advantage of the $299 US deal. Now, no worries.

I bought the academic version of Photoshop 7 in the summer of last year. When Photoshop CS came out at the end of last year I bought the upgrade and didn't have any problems doing it. As far as I know, the academic version can always be upgraded to a later version without any problems and it's even marketed that way.

Working for a college all I ever buy are the academic versions of software. The only difference between academic and store purchased software is the price. Software makers want their products in hands of students so that once they get out into the real world all they will want to use is their products. If you are a student academic price is the smartest way to go.

Unless of course they change their mind. "Sorry." "See the guy who assured you it would work." "Not our fault." "We promised nothing." "You're not a student, buy the regular version."
The difference to me is that Adobe, and others, would be happy to upgrade their Academic versions, LAST YEAR. Last year they knew that if they didn't, people would just steal it. Now they have closed off that door with the verification process, and can choose, if they want too, to screw over anyone. After Photoshop CS where are you going to go? To Photoshop Elements? Now all of this is speculation, but without a written assurance that the Academic version of PSCS will be fully upgradable in the future I just would just get the $299 deal, which I did.

I was home-ported out of the Long Beach Naval Station for two years back in the days of the Great White Fleet. Does that count for anything?
Probably not since you snot-noses probably weren't even born then.

That actually gives me an idea for a thread
Tom - you're right, I don't know what that means. But I'm pretty sure it counts for something. I see that it was a "white" fleet, like L-enses that must be a good thing :?:

Borrowed from someone's website:
The "Great White Fleet" sent around the world by President Theodore Roosevelt from 16 December 1907 to 22 February 1909 consisted of sixteen new battleships of the Atlantic Fleet. The battleships were painted white except for gilded scrollwork on their bows. The Atlantic Fleet battleships only later came to be known as the "Great White Fleet."
Now, I'll bet your impressed.

An insightful question....
It really depends on what kind of animal skin we used to make them with. Zebra sails were, of course, striped and were highly desireable. Elephant hides gave us much larger sails, but tended to make the craft top-heavy. Squirrels were easy to catch and skin, but offered little in the way of speed because of the small sail area. There's a lot of technology in this field.
