Notice it can take tripod ring somewhat; and wonder if anyone actually ever use a tripod ring with this lens?

I use my tripod ring on any lens that features it :D

Its perfect for switching orientations easily without having to reframe, it does get in the way sometimes though :(

Only bother if you shoot alot of tripod or monopod images, if you shoot handheld most of the time... then theres no point.

I'll use this 200 + 5D2 for street photography 1st; and also use it on crop later on.

Remember that the 200:2.8 does not have IS, so a monopod on a cloudy day might be helpful...

Some people prefer L plates though, personally i dislike having to unlock/relock my entire camera just to switch orientation, but it is an option.

I bought this lens a few weeks ago, and I must say I'm pretty amazed by the very good image quality. For this price (I paid $955 here in Belgium), I can't get any better.

...does it bother some of you with the lens not having IS?Not really. You get used to it. In my case that is very easy since most of my lenses do not have IS. Only two lenses do, and out of those two I only really use the one.

This is a particular well made lens. I was blown away with the first results I saw. Sharp wide open. Very little chromatic aberration. Fast focus. Something that I am not used to with my #1 go to lens ... the ol' dust pump. :D

PS: I did squeak out a little extra sharpness by micro adjusting the lens and body.

I'm going to Japan / Taiwan this December, I'll only bring my 24L, 85L & 200L - All Primes for city travel.

But I'll use my 28-300L for my Safari this September; this 200L for my wife.

Can't trust 5D2 AF, so I always use one-shot only AF; and one shoot each time - easy to clean up than continues shooting mode, too :D

Ridgeback in hot pursuit. The long dead grass kind of killed this shot. Full frame, no crop. I think the few cut of parts help this portrait. Getting everything in frame all the time is boring.

It seems that the 70-200 f2.8 IS II is an outstanding lens and lot of people compare its quality to that of a prime but has anyone compared this lens with the 70-200 2.8 non IS?Im on my second copy of the zoom,the first one had a terrible back focus problem and while the current one does not have that issue, I find it quite unusable at f2.8.During daylight this is not an issue but even then at f4 it is not mighty sharp and the bokeh is not as good.I wanted to buy the prime about a year ago but went for the zoom because of its versatility.That said I would definitely trade that versatility for a sharp and usable picture at f2.8.Doing so would bring me some extra cash for a wide anlge too, so Im definitely considering the trade.Let me know your opinions if you have tried these two lenses.My main use is sports by the way, indoor and outdoor.
