Sync speed with strobes on shouldn't matter unless you have too much ambient light and you're not stopping down far enough to drop out the ambient effects.
Also with some bodies you can push it 1/3 stop past the sync speed and not see it in the frame. And why can't you hold 1/FL (even though it shouldn't matter) -- do you need to switch to Sanka decaffinated?

I'm not understanding what you're saying here - I'm talking about in studio here - almost always at f/11, all ambient cut out completely. If I shoot anything above 1/160 on my 5D I get the partially black frame, anything above 1/250 on my MK3 and that happens. So the point is my shutter has to be at those speeds in order to use my studio strobes, and at those shutter speeds, camera shake is visible on the 200L 50% of the time :(. Unless for some reason the flash fires faster than 1/200 but won't sync at that speed, I'm not following.

The actual duration of the strobe is much much less than 1/200. This explains it pretty well
http://www.flickr.com/groups/43292336@N00/discuss/72157612736909611/
Your shutter speed is inconsequential if your ambient light isn't affecting the exposure, the strobe duration is very very quick. You should never see motion blur.

That's the kind of thing I thought you were getting at. I think you are right, guess I didn't need to sell the 200 after all...goddammit :p. Oh well, the 135L is pretty sweet on the 1D3 so I'll just hang onto it for a while.

I've had the mkI verson of this lens for a couple of weeks now. This is the first Canon lens to really amaze me and I've used alot of Canon lenses. Love the built in hood of the mkI.
Its difficult for me to imagine ever selling this lens, its simply phenomenal.

It's an interesting lens, I've only had mine a few days and here are my thoughts so far.... It's a cheaper build than the 135L, much of it's casing is plastic especially around the tripod mount recess. Which is a surprise, where as the 135L has more metal in it's construction. .
Don't know about the mkII, but I've got the mkI version and it feels like nothing but metal - its the best built Canon lens I've ever held. After all, isn't it nick-named the "prime-pipe"?

i read somewhere that this lens on a crop camera, such as my xsi, it was difficult to get sharp images due to camera shake. Seeing as it is the equivalent of 320mm.
How do people here with crop bodies find the lens and the camera shake issue?

It is probably the easiest ~300mm lens you'll find to hand hold... it is small, compact, and balances well. I like it with the tripod collar on as it gives a palm rest on the bottom.
So it isn't any more difficult to hand-hold than any other 200/320mm lens you'll find. If I can get a brace on something, I'll go consistently to 1/60th on full frame with it.

Thank a lot, I'm glad I sold my 70-200F4L for this pure gem of glass.
About the exposure.. I did my metering on my dogs and then I lowered the fill light and the exposure around 'em with Lightroom so I can get a visible image without any blast of highlight.
Thank to the metering on my 450D, my dogs exposure was great from the start!

just saw this quote and i have to agree 100%. I want my 200/2.8 back in the worst way. Trying to decide if getting rid of the 17-40L is worth it to pick up the 200/2.8?
kolok
1st of April 2009 (Wed), 22:04
I'd suppose it depends on a couple of factors: shooting style and finances. The 200 isn't a cheap lens, but neither is it way out of reach like many L lenses. Additionally, if your shooting style (and finances) permits you to have both, then by all means add the 200 and keep the 17-40!
In my particular case, the 200 was my first L lens which I initially used on my EOS 3 and Elan7e; I added the 17-40 years later. Both serve different purposes but oddly enough I often combine the two in street and nature photography - the 200 allows for some discretionary tighter shots from a distance while the 17-40 brings in a nice "whole" picture - especially practical on my 5D. Beauty of both these lenses is that neither one attracts too much attention.
The 135 you show in your signature isn't a slouch though. That's a beauty of a lens as well.
Choices, choices.... money, money... decisions, decisions.... I hate those words. :p

oy i know. the thing is, the 135L is pretty darn close in FL to the 200 so im not sure if it'd be wise to do. There is always the option of the 1.4x tele which would give me roughly 200/2.8. not sure what the IQ would be comparatively speaking but it might be worth a shot to keep the 17-40.

I've been researching this lens quite a bit (likely my next big lens purchase) and I'm a bit concerned with the CA at f/2.8. I looked at the charts at The Digital Picture and was a little put-off by the CA wide open. Is it really that bad in practice? I figure I'll be using this lens wide-open quite a bit, especially for sports. I'll be using a 30D.

CA isn't really an issue with this. The 135L and 85IIL have far more CA than the 200IIL.
What I would say it that there is CA colouring if the point of focus is off. From the review site that you posted, I'd say that there's a slight front focus to image. It's not a surprise really, it was taken with a pre-live view camera.
I've owned and used a number of good 70-200/2.8 lenses from Sigma and Canon. optically, they are pretty much the same but with different contrast, build ect. The 200mm f2.8 II L is sharper and has less vignetting than any of the zooms.
If you want versatility, get the zoom. If you want the best optically, then get the prime.

I tried out a copy of this lens at the Camera Exchange and was thoroughly impressed. Good heft, solid-feeling and its optical performance is perfect. It easily out-resolved my 30D's sensor. Of course, they wanted $834.00 :-P
I had one concern though. This new copy of the lens felt like it had some sand or grit in the focus ring. It was smooth and tight but I felt a grittiness at several points in the travel.
I'll spend a few months saving up and try to find a mint used one for $550-600.

CA has nothing to do with the sun being out of the frame. That would be related to flare.
CA has to do with contrast and stuff. If you shoot a dark tree against a blown sky, you will get some amount of CA depending on how far you pixel-peep ;)

hmm...I just googled this new term: "pixel peep" and found this:
Itīs when you look at a picture at very high magnification. Sometimes you discover things you certainly donīt want to be there.
Eg.
1) lack of sharpness
2) purple fringing
3) Dead pixels
etc, etc
So, if you want to beleive your gear is perfectly fine, and that you are one h.ll of a photographer: donīt pixel peep...

Pixel peeping is pointless. The printer fits (or should if the photog prints correctly) 200-300 of those pixels into ONE INCH. You will hardly notice any of the small defects you see when zoomed in @ 1:1

I just sold my 100mm macro (to my Mum who I don't see often, so I had to take the opportunity to help her out).
I'm getting the 70-200mm 2.8L IS (later) to replace it. However I'll still keep the 200mm 2.8L because it's such a great street photography lens and it's small enough to fit in a small bag along with my 5Dmkii/24-105 when I go out with my family.

Im looking to buy this lens used, the local shop have one used for ~550 Euros (~740 usd). Its mk1 and have built in hood, which to me seems a bit loose, but then again i have never owned a lens with one before so it might be like that. Lens looks like in good condition, no signs of wear. So what i am asking is, is this price good? I know that shop is a bit greedy imo, cuz some things there are overpriced... And only what is difference from Mk1 to Mk2? only the hood? or?

Shot with a 40D and yes, at 2.8! I couldn't believe how sharp that photo came out. I adjusted the white balance and the color curves a bit.

How would you compare this to the 400mm f5.6? I was looking at the 400 but now I think I may want this!

I didn't not compare my lens to the 400 F5.6!
But honestly I think exenteder are only a cheap alternative. If you need a 200mm, buy yourself one, if 400mm is what you need, go for it.
What I do love about the 200mm is the sharpness at 2.8, it's simply amazing how sharp it is.
As for the choice, I think a lens longer than 300mm need IS or a strong tripod.

I really like bringing it around with my 24-105 on my 5Dmkii (also bring a 430ex II flash) when I'm going around with my family. It gives me a bit of a reach option when I need it.

If you can use flash it should be OK (I know flashes aren't rated above 105mm, but it works). However I am getting a 70-200 2.8L IS for versatility as I think that lens is more than good enough (sharpness wise) for wedding etc. Not as sharp as the 200 2.8L but nice enough.

Even closer. I just ordered 200 2.8 II from B & H. I didn't care for that focal length on 30D. But FF is making me change my mind. I had my doubts when I added 135L. But I love it on my 5D2. And I think I am going to love 200L just as well. I am a big fan of primes, once again.
Plus, I am starting to shoot weddings and events; it'll be real handy. I can not wait.
