Wow Stealthy, love your Photoshop skills to get rid of your second head  (Assuming that is you :p).
This lens has always been interesting, but I've had my 70-200/2.8 for a year and I don't think I could be without it.

I am having a bad case of seller's remorse. When I had it, I wasn't using it, so I sold it for a 17-40mm. Now that its gone, I have had a couple of occasions where I reallllllly could have used it. So now my new mission in life, save my pennies and find and buy another 200mm 2.8 Mk II!!!

Thanks! These are in a Zoo in Holland. It's called "De Apenheul", it's a specialized zoo with monkey's and apes. The Squirrel Monkeys are not in a cage so they cross your path, it's a true photog's paradise.
You can check this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=773041) thread for more pics, or their website (also in English) http://www.apenheul.com/ for more info.

I've never worked with this range before other than the 70-200 2.8 IS (which I borrowed). At 200mm without IS, would this work well handheld during outdoor weddings with good light? I shot almost everything wide open with the 70-200 but never worried about shutter speed because of the IS and I'd say about 95% of my shots were in focus.
So without IS, how well would this work? Similar? Or do you generally use monopods for this long range without IS?
Thanks,

Just got the lens.
It's bad ass! Current line up is now 24-70L, 85L II, 200L II, and sigma 24 f/1.8 Macro. This lens is lighter than I thought it was going to be. It's kind of amazing really.
Feel sorry for my roommate when I get new lenses. I'm always asking him to pose in the backyard even if the sun is harsh haha...

I love it when you've got a green background and the lens just completely blows it out like this so it's almost like you've put up a green background sheet. That will be a great shot for his senior yearbook if they do baby/kid shots with their pictures. nice shot

Kelley those shots on Flickr are outstanding. Did you shoot Jpeg or Raw. I am just tinkering with little league football...I will have to give my 200 a workout. I've used the 300 f4. Also at what aperture were those taken?
Thanks Al! I just now saw this reply. Those were taken at f/3.2 ,ISO 800, ss 1/1250. My 200 was my favorite lens this season, it's a great length for youth football. There were times when I was wanting for a zoom but just did some more moving around instead :) Those were shot RAW...I mostly shoot Jpeg though.
Thanks again!
Kelley
P.S. I checked out your galleries...you've taken some really beautiful flower and bird shots!!

im loving it now, i think you have to realise with this lens, your not going to use it for everything and all the time, i will use it solely for automotive shots like the one above, if i get one good shot using that lens from a shoot im happy, i posted that pic in other forums and a lot of people were loving that depth of field, its amazing and its super sharp
your pic is a great example what was the aperture?

I picked up a vgc mk1 yesterday complete with a brand new tripod collar.
Few specs of dust behind the front element but they dont show on images. I was considering getting this serviced by Canon but after some fairly non-descript test shots I dont think I need to.
The AF is blisteringly fast and accurate, colours are amazing and when you nail the shot the sharpness and bokeh are incredible.
Once I get some forum worthy shots I'll put them up :)

Yeap, that I have....and know that he was presented with that award, though, it seems many were not happy with the decision. Guess time will tell, whether he deserved it, or not. ;)
Joaaso
11th of December 2009 (Fri), 18:22
yeah, its been a controversial decision, but I think thats mainly because the concept of the award/prize is a bit misunderstood among many.. If you read Alfred Nobels testament, you'll find that this years decision is very much like what he wanted for this price. This award is meant to focus on the what's been done in the latest year, and to be "an instrument for peace in the world" -with future in mind (thats also why the winner recieves money I guess -to help fund the work in the future -if needed of course), instead of being just a "stamp of approval" after the work is finished -as the chairman in the Nobel commitee said yesterday. And Obama followed with a very impressive speech -almost like a lecture in how to be a world leader and all the dilemmas that comes with that job, and I think most of those who heard it was left with the feeling of that the future of the world is in good hands -and thats good enough for me..!
I have to admit; at first I had decided not to bother going downtown to see him for that 1minute, but after that speech I just got a feeling that this was history in the making and if I didn't do it, I would regret it a few years from now..;)
Anyway, here's some more 200 f2.8 stuff:

The trick is not being afraid to apply a lot of fill light or brightness to the image. Then you can go either way with the color tone... cold or warm. In this case I added a bit of a blue cold tone to the image.
From there, you add your sharpening technique and some contrast to bring out the darks/blacks.
Hope that helps! And thanks for liking my processing. It's always hit or miss with people.

I use both pretty much evenly. The 70-200 when my feet cannot zoom fast enough and the 200 when ambient light becomes an issue. Also the 200 works very well with TC's. In my case I have a 300 and a 400 as well...

It's funny, I took in Monza last summer a quite similar picture with hamilton with a TC2X but coupled to a very old 300L2.8nonIS ..

Because of my first time use of 300L2.8mm I did only very few pictures with panning :o
http://photos.corbi.eu/Formula-One/Race/Classic00003/650461022_uVHWm-XL-3.jpg
My major objectiv was to try my "new" very old lens with TC 1.4, TC2.0 and even stacked .. so pictures are note really interesting, but sharpness, AF speed, contrast were over my expectations ..
http://photos.corbi.eu/Formula-One/Race/9643224_RfG6m/1/650461022_uVHWm
I was wondering wether I could get such sharpness with a 70-200L2.8 or 200L2.8, now -> I don't think so ..
let's hope, next year I can improve my technic and get more panning pictures :D

The lack of sharpness is probably more down to my technique than the lens... This was my first GP and also my first real attempt with the 2x converter.
Here is one with the lens stopped down at f/5.6 (EXIF says f/11 with the 2x) and at 1/250 second as an attempt at panning...

Good panning  ... but it seems you were even more frighten than me  I tried panning at 1/100  .... I think good shutter speed should be 1/30 or 1/60.
Can you tell about AF speed, was it alright with 2X or were you obliged to do MF + préfocus ?
And the 200L2.8 AF is it quick enough ?

I didn't have any issues with AF. I am using a 1D Mark II so that probably helped. I just used single point AF with AI Servo. Focusing whilst panning was fine and also when I was on a bend and the cars coming towards me. On a straight coming straight towards you might be a challenge, I don't know.

shooting a fast scene like Horse Racing is pretty much "shoot and pray"...you have a very small window of opportunity. You have to just shoot lots of frames and just pick later. I am really loving this lens, I think it's one of the best primes of Canon "L" series.
