A question... I'm positive it's been asked, but does anybody know of a real objective comparison between this lens and the 70-200 2.8L at 200mm (2.8)?

Thanks,
Chuck

I just sold my 70-200L f/2.8 to buy this lens... @ 200mm... it wasn't as sharp as the prime. My shots are on the previous page... you can see a 100@ crop... and some more sample shots on my flicrkr page.

I saw a comparison between the 70-200 2.8 MK I, 70-200 2.8 MK II and the 200 2.8 prime somewhere - I think it was on pbase.com, but I am not 100% sure.

This is far from a perfect comparison.. but the new 70-200 mkII looks pretty impressive when compared to the prime 200 II using this test (http://the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=245&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=687&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=2&FLIComp=3&APIComp=0).

I try to keep up above 1/200th.... I'm the same way with the 135L... both lenses really show camera shake. Could use a monopod? I'm using mine more :)

^^ Cool shot. The starkness of it reminds me of an active volcano I saw in Chile years ago.

This is the first time that I have noticed a shot with the GPS coordinates included in the EXIF. I am not sure if the map link (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=37.70166666666667&mlon=-107.7975&layers=B000FTF) is in the EXIF, or part of the EXIF Viewer 1.55 add-on to Firefox, but looking at the EXIF in firefox, there is a map link (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=37.70166666666667&mlon=-107.7975&layers=B000FTF) that took me straight to a map of the area.. very cool. I knew that feature existed, but I had never seen it.

What did you use to get the GPS coordinates into the EXIF?

It's Engineer Mountain in the San Juan National Forest north of Durango, CO. I use Aperture 3 for my photographs. I will carry a Garmin 60csx GPS to record my tracks whenever I'm shooting. At then end of the day, I download the photos to Aperture 3 and save the track using the Garmin software. Aperture 3 can then import the saved track and match the time stamps on the photographs with the time stamps of the track. When it does that, the coordinates are automatically added to the EXIF.

Aperture 3 uses Google Maps, so you can look at it as a regular street view or a satellite image.

Pretty young ladies.

In relation to the 200 prime, it's an excellent lens for close-ups of flowers and small things. Just attach a Kenko tube to it, and it will get you close to the subject while still maintaining a deep DOF. I had good results with a 12mm Kenko tube (one of tree tubes in the kit).

I'm sure it is, but I find it hard justifying that when I own a macro lens. I know it would be a totally different beast but still, those kenko tubes aren't that cheap.

As in mounting your camera/lens combo to the tripod and not using a lens collar mount?

It isn't super heavy... but... I would invest in the tripod ring to help balance out the load.

Hope this helps.

No problem. I didn't want to spend the $ on the tripod collar... but... in the end... it was worth it. I shoot the lens on a monopod and it balances out really nice. Great lens!

Just an FYI. The tripod ring from the 70-200 f4 or 400 5.6 lens works on the 200 2.8. So if you have either lens you can save yourself some money.

Here is a trick I learned. I have a large women's hand, so figure an average man's hand. Hold your arm out and make a fist. That is roughly the coverage area of a 200mm lens on a cropped camera. Hope that helps.

Not sure if anyone can help me or not. I'm considering renting this one for a Gary Allan concert that the family and I will be attending in September. We've got great seats, we have gold circle tickets. Anyways, I was wondering if this lens would be too long for say a full body shot from a few rows back. Thanks, and sorry for rambling, LOL.
It might be a bit too long depending on how many rows back you are from the stage. I shot a music festival back in July with a 100mm L macro lens and needed to be about 35 feet back to get full body shots with a bit of stage context around the musician.

Try experimenting with a family member outside and see how far back you have to get in portrait and landscape to get them comfortably into the frame and that will tell you if this focal length will be usable at the show.

Cheers!

Well, I've rented this lens for the next week, so I should have some pictures to share.

One thing I noticed already is that without IS, it's actually somewhat hard to compose a shot. If you're trying to fill the frame with something, the shaking is challenging.

Increase your shutter speed to compensate and consider at least 1/200th of secs maybe more until your technique in handling a 200mm improves.

I think it works. It's a shame more of the Ferrari wasn't in the sun though.

LiberationFrequency
24th of September 2010 (Fri), 16:34
Shooting this 200 on a crop is more zoom than I originally bargained for and I find myself having to be creative in where I position myself.

That ferrari is actually a sequence of shots. He was WAY off in the distance coming up the road and I was playing with Av mode. As he came closer I started to stop the lens down, shot, step down, shot, step down, shot, etc.

I hoped to get it with motion blur (its a 25mph zone) but handholding an effective 320mm, without IS, with 1/40th of a shutter is kinda sketchy with me right now. I need more practice. Speaking of which, I am gonna go back to the same spot in a bit and get some more pictures... the golden hour is coming!

Then, when I do get someone coming up on me fast and I DO get a good shot off... I chop his head off. FML. No real PPing, just pulling back exposure, touch of white balance, and maybe bumping up vibrance and saturation by 5 points in LR.

I have found this lens to be actually viable for portraits, like the example above. The bokeh that it provides when you frame someone's face is just unbelievably smooth and nondescript. Problem is I have a crop camera and that 200mm is a hell of a reach. I want to try it with a FF when I get one this christmas.

It was from the stands. They didn't even check my small camera bag. I had my 24-105 f/4 on the 40D when I went through the turnstile. Plus, the 200 mm f/2.8 is not that big and on a crop camera it's more like a 320 mm.

Yeah, 200mm on a crop is awesome, plus its black. Just don't rock the lens hood and its not intimidating at all. I even snuck a 70-300 into a game, and on a crop, its retarded long. No good shots because of f/5.6, no IS, and iso1600 max on my camera.

this lens intrigues me. I love the 300 f/4 is and have used it to shoot surfing (and bikinis at the beach lol) and I own the 1.4 converter. this lens is about $500 less than the 300 and I'm wondering how would this lens with the converter compare to the 300 for shooting surfing. both would be at f4.

from the 300...can i get the same type of shot using the 200 with converter. i really like the blur from the 300

Occasionally I get tempted to sell my 100/2 and 200/2.8LII and get a 135L instead (I went the other way about a year ago), but then I remember that I didn't really like the focal length and am cured for another couple of months. :) The only reason to why I'm even considering it is that I miss the shorter MFD of 135L (other than that the 135 and 200 are equally good, and the 100 very nearly so) and it'd be nice to replace to replace two lenses with one. We'll see where I end up.
