I plan on buying a 17-40L with a GND in the near future, and was curious as to which set up would be as far as the GND filter goes. I want either a 1.2 or 0.9 for a much more dramatic effect. I'm new to the rectangular filters, and I'm trying to learn more about them. Any suggestions and help would be appriciated.

Two very good articles linked to from the Singh Ray Grad ND (http://www.singh-ray.com/grndgrads.html) page.

On the APS-C sensor the Cokin P setup can be used. I'd suggest starting with an 0.6 soft edge then the 0.9. That way you could stack the two for -5 stops compensation.

Brand type as Jon pointed out Singh Ray are very highly recommended but expensive. HiTech makes an excellent and affordable filter as does Lee.

Are you saying the Cokin P can't be used on a FF camera? What has to be used then?

No not at all _ its does have to do with the millimeter size of the lens in use. For FF I believe they recommend using the Cokin P to around 28mm, which would be 17mm on the cropped sensor.

Here's the Cokin web site for details (http://www.cokin.com/ico15/ico15-haut.html?=#p)
