I actually never gave much thought to the brand for UV filters. I usually use whatever brand the store I buy from has displayed most pominently. Usually, this is Hoya.

What are your favorite filter brands?

I like B+W, but Hoya (especially the Multi-Coated) is probably very close.

The latest thing (that I have noticed) is the 'slim' filter designed to prevent vignetting. If you are entirely digital, this is not worth chasing, since the crop factor reduces the Angle Of View. Nice idea for film, though (and perhaps the EF-S lens).

my 100 2.0 has a canon and so does my 28-90 4.5 go figure, probaly the filter on that lens is worth more than the lens. Got that with my Elan 7e and found out how poor it is when I put it on my 10D.

Is Canon a good quality filter? (UV)

I'm using B+W on my 28-135 and the rest are using Hoya. I like the B+W mainly because of the MRC coat which makes it really easy to clean..:)

Sunpak UV for the 17-40L
Sunpak UV for the 75-300IS

Yes, you can say I got it wrong, I have expensive stuff for the 28-135 (inexpensive) lense, and cheap filter for the 17-40L. That's true. I don't really notice the diff; and if its a critical shot, I"ll take off the filter in any case. I am planning to get something better for the 17-40 though.

I'm using a B+W MCR. I didn't like the canon. It affected my auto-focus.

My Canon filters are becoming scratched just by looking at them..

The Hoya caused my Sigma 70-200mm to go all "backfocus" on me... so I think I need to try a B&W.

I use Hoya Super HMC PRO, they cost a little more but worth it (possibly)

Tiffen are not coated and more prone to lens flare - (use lens hood)

* The Tiffen Haze-1 is best. It's a neutral filter so color balance is unaffected.
* Next is the Tiffen 812. Good UV blocking if you also want a warming filter
* The Hoya 81B warming filter is quite similar to the Tiffen 812.
* The Hoya UV filter comes next, neutral, but with 2 stops of UV blocking.
* The B+W KR1.5 gives about 1.5 stops of UV blocking with slight warming.
* The Tiffen polarizer gives less than a stop of UV blocking - but that's not why you use a polarizer!
* The B+W UV and Hoya 1B aren't very effective UV blockers. The 1B is slightly warming
* The three "generics" and the Tiffen UV protector are pretty useless for blocking UV, though they may make fine, neutral, lens protectors."

the later was taken from the above Bob Atkins link and was Last Modified 05/13/2005 18:30:19 so it should be still a usfull and fairly upto date test resource for UV Filters.

Personally, I'd like to see several other commercial grade as well as some other pro filters added to this UV filter test to make it more complete - but that is was all i found with a quick browse.

B+W are very very nice filters. However Hoya filters are nice replacements.

All my lenses are fitted with hoya pro1's with no effect on IQ.:D
