I picked up this link (http://www.editorialphoto.com/outreachep/wap2.asp) from photo news service that I subscribe to.
Be warned it is a long article. It deals with where certain parts of the photo industry is going with respect to getting assignments. It is interesting to say the least.

Nice read.
To sum it up: Nobody wants to pay the photographers. The evil doctors and dentists have nice cameras and produce semi-professional, client satisfying images undercutting the pros. There is lots of them.
Stock photography is evil. There's a new business model making photographers compete for assignments without covering the expenses. Only one out of five photogrpahers is actually getting paid.
To fight the trend:
Diversify your client base
Say no to bad clients
Be informed
Get involved and educate fellow photographers
Produce high quality works, setting yourself on a higher level
Do no sign away the copyright
Register your images
