Thanks for sharing the Squad car photo, I sure like to see cruisers, and the firetruck behind it.
Nighttime emergenct shots can be a nightmare to take. Strobes, lights, etc. On top of everything, you have a foreground, subject and background as well.
Looks like the camera meter got fooled by the bright blue light.
When I take photos in scenarios like this, I usually go to Tv (Aperture will usually crank itself to wide open anyways) and then experiment with shutter speeds.
I like the adventurous spirit. Keep on going, maybe get a radio scanner, and tune in to their emergency frequency. It can help a lot. Or ride along, that is the easiest way to get to an accident (though photographing a dead body may not be allowed if you arrive with the LEOs).
