I wonder if I might get some help from an experienced RAW processor.
Can I send someone who is well versed in RAW a picture, and they produce a JPG (not TIF b/c of size) as best post processing as they can. I'd like to compare it to what I do and see if I'm on track. I think I am, but then when I see many other pics posted here - I don't think my pics are as good.
Any takers?

I'd be willing to volunteer as well...
I have sent you a "PM" with my address that will take such a large attachment.

OK thanks everyone. I will fire up my FTP server a little later today and post 2 pics that I think I'm having trouble with.
I'll post the IP and PW.

OK - the FTP server is up and running.
68.69.12.84
ID: Canon
PW: Digital
(case sensitive)
4 pics, 8 files.
4110 - I think is too dark and blurry
3924 - too dark
4241 - too dark
4345 - too grey and not true snow white
I will leave the FTP site up until tommorrow (Tue) at 12noon EST USA.
I suppose then, everyone can post the final JPG to this forum as soon as they are complete - and I will post mine.
Thanks!

Don't know if you can call me experienced, but here are my attempts at the files. Note there are two versions of the air museum pic - not sure which one I like better.
All conversion done is PSCS, resampled to smaller size and saved as jpeg for web.

Leo,
I really like your version... the plane really jumps out frojm the background. How did you do it? I am guessing that you masked out the plane and applied different settings to it and the background... is this right?

and one more thing, Leo... I checked out your web link in your sig. The "Basilica" link in the gallery points to the Hawk pictures - you may want to fix that.
Some nice shots there.

Well, sort of, but not quite that simple. The key is layers! I must have used about 5 different layers and a gradiant layer masking on one of them to get the effect I was looking for.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll get on it right away.
BTW, the link off of the Basilica thumbnail is OK, in case you didn't get a chance to see it.
Thanks again.

Should have figured layers has something to do with it. Main point is that you had to do some work to get the picture to look like that... I would have been very upset if you said "I ran it through a free PS action I found on the net" or "I just turned up the xxx slider to 57." Again, nice work.
Thanks also for the tip on the thumbnail link, I never though of clicking the photo - your shots came out very nice. Something about those grand-scale religious places.
Makes me with I had my DRebel with me at the Vatican last August. I only had my S40 then, and with the 3 kids running around and the 95 degree heat, and the video camera... you get the idea. I shot what I could when I could in full-auto. Here is one of my favorites... (S40, full auto, no tripod, no post-processing - jpeg right from the camera. That's my youngest in the foreground).

and I am still trying to get shots like this with my DRebel!

Here goes:-
4110 - way underexposed and at ISO 800 very noisy. Why did you shoot at ISO 800 when you were using flash? The inbuilt flash should have had plenty of power to light that shot at ISO 100, then the grain(noise) would not have been a problem. Another problem is that the 10D gets the exposure wrong with flash when you ajust the ISO. As you see in this shot it managed to underexpose by nearly 1.5 stops. Unless this shot is particularly treasured or of sentimental value then it would not be worth the effort to attempt to transform the 'pigs ear' into the proverbial 'silk purse'.
3924 - For me, the main problem was that the huge amount of light spilling in from the right, drew the eye away form the plane. The second problem was the noise created by using ISO 800, and finally the fact that the front of the plane was effectively in shadow.
I used FVU to make two tiff files, one at +1 stop, and one at -2 stops. I used Noise Ninja to remove the grain(noise) and then combined the two into one image using the underexposed image to darken the RHS and the underexposed image to lighten the plane. Then a little colour ajustment and sharpen gave the following:-
http://www.ragwort-uk.com/plane.jpg
I think that the front of the plane, in particular in the engine compartment could do with being lighter still, using the same technique of making a +2stop copy and laying this in where required.
4241 - I liked this shot very much, slightly underexposed and tilting to the left, but great potential. I added 0.7 stops using FVU to shift the histogram to the right, then in PS rotated to get the lamp post upright, cropped to taste, colour ajusted and sharpened to get this:-
http://www.ragwort-uk.com/bridge.jpg
Finally 4345 - Slightly underexposed, but huge potential. The 10D tried to meter the snow to grey so the shot has come out dull, but remember, snow is NOT white, it generally a subtle blue/grey, so don't go bang the exposure up to make it pure white because you will loose all the texture it contains. On this shot I pushed +0.7stops using FVU, then in PS simply colour ajusted, cropped and sharpened.

That's definately one for the album.
It starts with the camera and your perception of a worthy composition. It ends in the darkroom with the creation of an image which captures and shares with others what you saw in that moment.

Missed the deadline as I was off travelling. Some interesting conversions which would have been nicer if people had all set out their conversion parameters

Thanks everyone who participated! My pics are up on fotopic, once they get approved, I will post here. I appreciate those that explained how they got to their final image during post processing.
I would appreciate some comments on how my photos differ from yours based on your eyes.
I've learned that I am not that far off from my final pics, but after viewing these pics, I am going to save a few for comparison so my eye can get "retrained".
