View Full Version : How do you insure your lenses?

I've seen people talk about lenses getting damaged and having insurance that covers everything, from being stolen to being dropped in the ocean. What type of insurance is this and what companies offer it. Is it worth having if you have under $5000 in gear?

Hi,
I have my cameras and lenses insured against theft and accidential damage through USAA. I have $9K total coverage w/no deductible for about $130 per year. It sure helps me sleep at night and the cost is minimal.
I also cover my wife's jewerly collection in the same fashion.

you can check with your home owner or renters insurance company and see if they will allow you to add a rider for your photography equipment (not for business use). this will be in addition to your insurance premium.

DO NOT ATTACH IT TO YOUR HOMEOWNERS POLICY!!! I can't stress that enough
get a seperate personal articles policy. They are very cheep and worth having.

I'm just staying with a roommate so I don't have renters or home owner's insurance. I don't know if somewhere will just insure my camera gear. I'll look into that USAA. Never heard of them.
Thanks,
Robert
Edit: Well, I'm not in the military, so USAA is out. lol

whys that.
my stuff is on my parents policy and my dad looks into things very thoroughly before he makes decisions like that. mabye its just with certain policys, but mine seemed to work out fine. havnt had to claim anything yet though. we live in florida though, they are charging us an arm and a leg just for living here, so it cant get much worse

because if you have to file a claim, it goes on your homeowners policy. Multiple claims will make you rates go up if not be cancelled. There are many horror stories about this. All you have to do is get a seperate riders policy that can be custom made to your needs, and for cheep. Insurance is not worth penny pinching.
Then can say that because you have "pro" gear, you are obviously making money, and therefore not covered under a homeowners policy, or if you were outside the US, blah blah blah
Its not worth it

I was thinking of getting USAA insurance plan, do you have to get the renters of home owners insurance too, or can you just get the personal?

I have USAA too but I have a renters policy then have a floater/rider on the side for my camera equipment.
You might want to check though, is USAA open to everyone now or is it still only military??

No, just military, veterans and spouses of military.
Being a veteran, I use their car insurance service and I have yet to find a better deal anywhere.

I just checked on the USAA web site, and only recently retired veterans are eligible. No provision for Korean War vets like myself.
