This is a little off topic but stick with it please…

I am heading off to the States in November this year I am really excited about photographing Yosemite in the snow, so far so good, I have even managed to get a room at Yosemite Lodge (its got to beat the tent I usually get).

My problem is that I need to pick up a 4 wheel drive in Las Vegas and drop it off in San Francisco, via Death Valley, Sequoia NP, Kings Canyon NP, Yosemite and Lake Tahoe. Ideally I want it to have snow tires and I understand that by law it must carry snow chains. I have searched the web, and telephoned countless car hire companies in LV, but have come to the conclusion that I must speak some strange English dialect because everyone I talk too either tells me that it doesn’t snow in Vegas or that they cant help me.

If any Las Vegas residents out there want to give me some advice I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks

Neil

I'm a local & yes our snowfall here is about 1" every 4 years. The best snow we have access to is Mt. Charlston which is about 40 minutes away or Brian head Utah & that is a couple of hours . Sounds like you have a good trip planned but I'm not to sure of a Car rental that supplies snow chains. Most of the people I've heard of purchase theres & a local PEP boys or Autozone when they have them in stock. My best advice is to bring extra cash or bring some with you or try locating a car rental company closer to heavy snow areas.

I would try to contact the car rental agencies that have a huge network of depots. Ask for a variety of cars to be held for you. One from no snow, and another to handle the snow. Depending on the carrier, cars and times, the cost of this may vary widely. Perhaps you could book this through your local travel agency (since they should be able to arrange this for you, and can compare the various prices from different providers.)

I would recommend one provider since you can drop off and pick up another while still under the original deposit, your just changing cars to handle the diffenent climate.
