How to use empty.php (or variant) outside of /gallery/ folder?

I'd like to have my main index page (of my site, not of my EE gallery) display the five most recent photos I've uploaded to EE, and I'd prefer to have it do it automatically (instead of having to update the HTML coding w/ links to each new image in EE, etc)...but I haven't been able to get empty.php to work out of the /gallery/ directory.

Any suggestions?

Have you looked at snippets.php and snippetdemo.php

I think that should let you do what you want to achieve as long as your main index page can run includes or is php

there is a setting that needs to be added to either empty.php or to the snippets... hang on... [time passes] i can't find it in my stuff but i know it was posted recently... i'm not sure that it is needed for stuff done within the gallery tree and that's why i don't have it in my code files... i tried it and it didn't make a difference in what i was trying to do so i removed it... but i know there is a post that has it... titled something like "missing code in snippets"...
