Greetings,

I take many digital photos with my 10D, and edit them with Photoshop CS on my G4 Powerbook.

When I order prints from Ophoto, Mpix, Adorama, or even the local Wal-Mart, the color looks very different.

Is there a device that will:

1. Calibrate my screen.

2. allow me to somehow scan in a "test" print and create a profile for a specific online printer? (Or even my home HP printer?)

I know there are lots of devices for color calibration, but which would meet my needs?

Thanks for any advice!

Rob

Spyder with Optical will calibrate your monitor. Some photo labs will provide you with the ICC profile for their printer. There are also ICC profiles on the web for some of the more popular commercial printers. I think most people submit their files tagged with sRGB.
You can find out more above by doing a search.

A pro I have been talking to says it is better to have a camera profile than the printer profile. He is using a software program along with a MacBeth chart to create his own profile for his dSLR. There are profiles you can download for most dSLR's on the net though.

I am experimenting with a profile for my online printer now (because I cannot find a profile for my G3). I will let you know how my first trial comes out.

I got my profile from www.drycreekphoto.com check it out, maybe your printer is there too.

Before you send files for print make sure your saved your images in sRGB colorspace. If not your prints might have different colors.

... you mean CONVERT them to the sRGB profile right? From what I have read, many printers cannot read an attached profile, the file must actually be converted to the profile.

OK, thot so.

I played with the printer profiles I found online (free) at Dry Creek, but was unimpressed. My "normal" sRGB files printed better than the profiled pics.

The point of the Dry Creek profiles is that they should be used with the printers for the Costco location for which they are prepared. There is no point in using one of these profiles and printing them on a different printer from the one profiled.
