I was thinking about this subject this morning while walking the dog and wondering if she was going to freeze herself to the snow.
All the things you don't have to buy if you live in the South (verses us tough and hardy folk who live in 4 months of sub artic weather)
I'll start....photo gear is what I'm after but toss in anything you like. Max 4 items per entry
1) 3 leg warmers for Gitzo
2) -45C windshield washer fluid
3) Neoprene face mask (does keep the nose prints off the LCD though)
4) Propane tourch used to thaw the tripod out of the ice.
Next :?: :?: :?:

5. Bottled barbecue sauce (unless you plan to mix it with a bunch of other stuff).
Yeah, I know, that's off topic a little, but its true.

I live in southern New Hampshire...I totally feel your pain. :) Here is my four things:
1. Fingerless gloves to be able to use the controls on the camera in the cold.
2. Extra batteries since they quit working when it is cold.
3. Extra gas to start the car early so that it is warm by the time you leave on a photo shoot.
4. Extra reprints of your summer images to keep your mind off the freakin' cold/snowy conditions outside.
I sure can't wait to go to Florida in three weeks!!!! Maybe I'll just stay down there! :P

Here in the Southern California Desert, we don't have to buy
1. Pants with legs that go below our knees.
2. Snow tires
3. Earmuffs (Although if they ever catch on as a fashion accessory, people will wear them here---especially the 'Hollywood Types' who come out here to attend the Sonny Bono Film Festival.)
4. Hay and oats. My donkey spends his winters in Canada.
Remarkably, just about one in three vehicles out here is an SUV. Why?

I thought the leg warmers for the 'pod were a joke, but sure enough, they have them. I never would have thought they'd need such a thing.
The only thing that comes to my mind when I hear about leg warmers is the movie "Flash Dance". :D

Tom,
Poor old Gizto needs em to keep from freezin his skinny little stems off.
As for the real pod, I bought a Manfrotto "Nature" series that has foam covers on the legs. At least I don't get my hands frozen to them anymore, or at least not on purpose.

Another you need when there's snow (I could have needed it today...) is a cushion on your back when going down on slippery ground (snow...)

Yeah the Florida weather now is GREAT!! In a month or so we will be cooking in our own perspiration(sp?)!
Oh and if you plan to move to Florida make sure you can speak the language. :)
It is nice to be able to shoot all year long and not bundle up.

Isn't that too monotonous, always nice and warm weather, sometimes a storm, and that's it?
I've never been to Florida, but I'm sure I'd love it... The pictures I see on TV, everything
(hmmm I guess, the tv-series Miami Vice in my youth added to my fascination for this part of the world...)

heh heh sometimes a storm? LOL in the summer we get TONS of rain. The good thing about the rain in Florida is it can look like HELL out and rain for only 20 minutes then the sun comes out. Bad part is lots of humidity after rain like that.
After a while palm trees look plain and no longer any fun to take photos of. I've been here for 20 years and kinda bored of the lack of seasons and always green. Trust me it gets old. Plus I can't speak the language so slowly im getting run out of Florida. :(

That my friend is a Sorel Winter boot that is rated to -100 degrees F.
Rather large and bulky. One walks as if one has a very bad rash when wearing the above footwear.

I know that you are, at least partly, joking but familiarity can be a problem. I was once on a train from Ayr, in Scotland, to Glasgow on a beautiful morning with a marvellous view over to Arran. As I got off the train I was teasing a girl who had been sitting near me because she had her head in a book all the way. She said "We only look over there when we have visitors".

As much as I hate cold weather and swear I'm moving to Florida every winter, we had quite a winter event that left our ordinary neighborhood looking like a winter wonderland. We had a snowstorm, than an icestorm, than another snowstorm. The trees are draped with a layer of snow and ice, giving off a soft glow. I noticed this as I was trying not to slide off the road on my way home from work, wishing I had my camera with me.
You'd never see this in Florida.
