Is Sigma 24-70mm (f 2.8) a good choice ?

This child's photo was shot in a village in shade ,with ambient light at ISO 200, f 6.3, 1/125 sec with the Canon 50mm f 1.8 lens using the Canon 350D camera. Will I get equally good results, meaning sharp photos ( unlike the kit lens 18-55mm ) using the Sigma 24-70mm f 2.8 lens ?
As I am planning to buy the the Sigma 24-70mm f 2.8 lens soon for general purpose people shooting outdoors is this lens a good choice for almost equally sharp photos like the Canon 50mm f 1.8 lens .

also in the same ball game is the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8...
alot of people rave on about these two lenses.. if you are just buying for general purpose it will be fine..

Verty, I think the problem is that the Tamron may not be available in India.

Darryl, should you get a good copy of the Sigma 24-70mm I think you will be quite happy with the results. It can give you excellent results.

I dont know if weight will be an issue for you, but it is a pretty heavy lens, and in my opinion, wont balance well on your XT. You will probably have to hold the setup by the lens. If that doesnt bother you, then you will be fine.

I like the photo that you posted! I don't know if you will find a zoom to be as sharp as your normal lens.

I like my Sigma 24-70mm. It seems to be a mixed bag on the reviews-some love it and others don't. If you search the forums, you will find some great examples of the Sigma.

I use mine quite a bit and have been very happy with it. It has become my user over my 17-85mm Canon lens.

It'll not be as good as 50 1.8, but better then kit lens for sure.

have you considred the Tamron 28-75 F/2.8 XR Di? Its smaller and lighter, and is still amazing optically. Most put it ahead of the Sigma and just behind the Canon L.

THANKS all you guys for your advice. Sigma as well as Tamron lens are available here in Mumbai.Sigma has an authorised dealer here and seems to be popular for many wedding photographers.
